It contained the basic texts and a reader with some of the more difficult to locate material. Also a study guide in print and on CD Rom.

Is it an improvement? I don't know. It is decidedly more "bite sized" and therefore doable.

Oh, they ALSO sent a very nice silk tie with a UoL logo and scales of justice pattern. I suppose that's the "old school tie" we're always hearing about? :D

So... no airbrakes, then. Pity. ;)

Are the texts standard texts or were they custom-written for the program?

A while back I found (and bought) a couple of big fat books (published by Oxford U.P.) being sold at Borders with the catchy poetic titles 'Philosophy 1' and 'Philosophy 2'. It turns out that they are readers that were commissioned for the University of London's external BA in philosophy.

Both of these babies are truly excellent, containing survey articles on different fields of philosophy written by a who's-who of big names. (Ned Block on the philosophy of psychology, Michael Dummett on the philosophy of mathematics, David Hillel-Rubin on the philosophy of social science, for example.) Each of these books is about 850 pages, so we are looking at about 1,700 pages of pretty dense writing here.

It seems most appropriate for undergraduates who have already had an introductory course, and if it's supplemented with readings from primary sources, it would probably go a long ways towards pulling students up to the level of the current professional discussions that one encounters in graduate school.

I have to say that I was impressed, and if this represents the general quality of U. of London materials in other majors, I'm even more impressed.

Watch out Nosborne! They are gonna have you in a "convocation" wearing a weird costume with a funny hat! (Nothing like normal NM cowboy hats and boots.)

Well, it IS a nice tie...what KIND of costume?

The "reader" DOES contain a number of articles and excerpts that have proven difficult to locate here so that'll help.
