    I am new to this board. I am searching for an online program in which I can get a master's degree in graphics programming possibly combined with art for doing such things as game design and animations.

    I do not care if the university is in the US or not, but do want it to be reputable and the degree accepted.

    I am also concerned about price as I have limited income. I would like it to be reasonable.

    I have been working as a graphic/web/educational CD designer for 7 years now and have extensive esperience in technical illustration. I have a BFA in Fine Art and a BS in Science. I currently am taking beginning programming classes at a nearby small university. I do not have a computer science background. So, my concern is to find a program in which I can be acepted without a CS degree.

    Thank you very much.

    Thanks but not sure about MFA

    Thank you very much for the link. I checked it out and found that it takes 60 credits to finish, which is too long for me, as I am 52 years old and will have to do this part-time. I am wondering if I could instead get a computer science master's degee rather than art, even though I do not have a CS bachelors. I just don't think an MFA is any good. All my friends with these degrees are doing something else, like glorified office manager or carpentry or something along those lines.

    Is there any hope for this? I like programming and am doing very well in it, A+ right now. I worked as a fine artist for 5 years and grew to hate the whole field. I want techy work.

    Comments please. Should I give up and just take undergraduate courses in computer science until I think I have enough under my belt?

    Re: Thanks but not sure about MFA

    Capitol College offers a graduate degree in computer science. The courses seem reasonably self-contained so you might be able to complete these courses without an undergraduate degree in computer science. You might have to do some extra background reading for some of the courses to familiarize yourself with some concepts.

    I am seriously considering Capitol College once I finish the undergraduate degree at Thomas Edison State College.

    Good luck!

    Thanks, This sounds good

    Thanks so much for the reply and link. This program looks excellent, like what I am looking for. I can take basic computer science classes where I live and probably get enough to apply.

    Thanks again.

    Florida Atlantic MFA

    Checked out the link; it's a shame many programs don't try to save their students money by substituting open source apps for the commercial ones; even with student discounts their required software list isn't cheap:

    *Alias/Wavefront Maya (current version)
    *Audio software
    *Adobe Photoshop
    *Adobe Premiere

    It seems to me the above could be satisifed with:

    * Blender 3D
    * Audacity
    * Gimp
    * MainActor

    In the Digital Media component of the vocational IT program I used to teach, I emphasized specific concepts (i.e. compositing, layering, capture frequency, transitions, wireframe view, final render, etc) in the tools rather than the tools themselves; this allowed the student to be more flexible in whatever job and job-related software tools were encountered.

    Thanks for the link

    Dear Friedrich,
    Thanks for that link. I could get into this program I think with just taking one more course here. I am not too rigid about the gaming thing. It is just the direction I want to go. A good basic education would make me happy.
