What's with U of Phoenix and Nevada?

    So here I am at an inn with about 187 television channels, and while surfing, there was a sort of infomercial for the University of Phoenix, and while they were saying that students from "any state" could enroll in the distance program, the line that flashed briefly at the bottom of the screen said "Offer not valid in Nevada and [another state was named, but the line was only there for a fraction of a second]." Wonder what that's about?

    There may be some programs they are not approved to offer in that modality.

    I.E. the counseling degrees are only in Tucson and Utah due to the CACREP regulations.

    Otherwise, I have no clue...

    In addition to the perfectly reasonable and logical possibility that aic712 mentioned, it could also be some kind of consumer protection regulation sort of thing. Certain kinds of offers intended to induce persons to purchase certain kinds of products or services under certain circumstances; or when said offers are proffered in certain ways, are not allowed in some states.

    Or it may be a liability issue. Under the laws of the excluded states, UOP may be held accountable for something -- or maybe must pay some kind of higher tax or something -- that other states don't require of it, so it voluntarily opts out of making the offer in just those two states.

    Really, without the details, it's kinda' hard to know what is the real reason; but it's probably something at least similar to one of these possibilities...

    ...or so I suspect.

    I tried a Google search for the phrases "university of phoenix" and "offer not valid in Nevada". l retrieved a couple of web pages, from January and February 2005, that had U of Phoenix advertisements when Google scanned them. The Google cache for these pages shows that the ads stated "offer not valid in Nevada or Tennessee".

    So the second state may have been Tennessee. But no idea why.

    Wow, interesting article!!! :eek: They BLASTED the Appollo Group and made them appear as blood-sucking money grabbers in lieu of providing a quality education (student quantity over educational quality = $$$).

    They also blasted for-profit institutions that are abusing Title IV funding. :eek:

    Dr. Bear;

    Not that I can find it to save my life, but I do remember reading an article that implied that Univ. of Phoenix tended to opt out of markets (such as Nebraska) that had already been saturated with similar offerings.

    Not just stumping for my institution of choice, but Bellevue is huge in the Nebraska market, particularly around Offutt AFB and the surrounding areas. Could be that schools such as this that offer similar (or better) programs for much more reasonable prices make the market unpalatable for the UOP juggernaut. Just a theory…..

    That's a good theory, but they will probably still find a way to advertise somehow, they spend more money on marketing than most schools have in their entire budget...

    aic712;

    I can offer anecdotal evidence of that. My wife enrolled with UOP, dropped it after two classes due to the "group" (i.e. one person does the work, 7 people get the grade) requirements.

    The amount of harassing phone calls trying to bring her back into the "assimilated" fold for months after that probably cost them hundreds of dollars, and only stopped after I threatened a BBB complaint.

    yup, they used to make me do that when I was an Academic Counselor. I never called anyone back after one no though, I just put them into DNC status, mainly becuase I am not a salesperson and most of the people they hire are.

    Yes, I remember this when I was going through their program. I sent numerous complaints about group projects for the very reason you mentioned. I didn't let it deter me though because the program served my purpose well.

    I had a similar experience with Capella when I was inquiring about their PhD program.
