I'm considering applying to Marist College's online MPA program. I really enjoy the flexibility of the online format. Frankly, I’d never heard of Marist until I began researching online programs. Some of my relatives seemed very impressed that I would consider Marist, which tells me the school is well known on the East coast, but I’m concerned about their reputation throughout the rest of the country.

Marist’s MPA catalog states that the program is “based” on standards set by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA); however, it’s not currently accredited by that organization. I understand they may be seeking accreditation in the near future.

Do any of you have personal experience with Marist and/or their MPA program?

Have any of you encountered resistance to a non-NASPAA accredited degree?

    Thanks in advance!

    Dale

Marist College has an excellent reputation here on the East Coast, but they're probably not well-known in other parts of the country.

If you want a regionally-recognized M.P.A. degree, look no further than California State University - Dominguez Hills.

Thanks! I checked out CSU-Dominguez Hills, and their MPA looks very interesting.

CSU Northridge, apparently, also has an online MPA program. http://tsengcollege.csun.edu/mpa/ I don't know much about it, a few e-mails should do the trick.

One thing you want to look at is the difference in feww charged. The Dominguez Hills program is self-supporting, meaning that they receive no sttae assistance. The current rate is $1050/course. Last year is was $800/course. I don't know if there will be another fee hike for this program next year, but you will not get "in-state" rates for this program.

So in addition to the course availability, ask the Northridge reps about their fees. If they are state supported, then that's a whole lot of savings for you.

Also, I don't know your timeframe, but CSU San Bernardino is (tentitively) about to laucn an online MPA program within the next year. An e-mail there would be worth it too. http://www.cbpa.csusb.edu/pa/programs.htm

    good luck
