    Peru State

    Hey Melissa,
I am attending Peru right now pursuing my BS in Psych. I am finishing up my first semester with them right now and I like it so far. You get plenty of atention from the professors as it is a small state school with like 1800 students of which I think only a handful are in the online degree programs right now. Emails are usually answered in a few hours or so and they will clarify anything you have that is a problem. The classes I have taken so far are normal undergrad classes, most are 8 weeks in length but there are a few gen eds that are still the regular 16 week format. The classes consist of general text reading around 2 chapters a week for the 8 week classes, discussion board postings, two chapter quizzes, mid terms/finals, and projects. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Re: Peru State

I emailed Peru and asked if they accept nationally-accredited degrees for transfer credit, but I never got a response. Do you know if they will consider NA credits/degrees or ACE-reviewed courses?

    Transfer Credits

    Hey Terry,
I am pretty sure that they take ACE reviewed courses but don't quote me on that. I will re-check the catalog and let you know. As far as the NA credits or degrees, I never asked, but here is the quote from the catalog " a maximum of 95 semester credit hours may be transfered from a regionally accredited 4 year college or university or extra-institutional sources ...of these 95 hours 66 may be from a community/vocational college or other extra-institutional sources". It may be that the "extra institutional source" could be an NA school but I think you may have to portfolio them to get the credit, as I believe that they do have a prior learning portfolio class. I know they take CLEP and Dantes credits also, up to 30 cr. I was planning on transfering to Bellevue or maybe Southwest after I finish Ashworth so I really didn't look into it. Dunno, you could give them a call I guess.

    ACE Recommendations

    Terry,
I checked the catalog and they follow the ACE standards for CLEPs so they may well follow the same for ACE reviewed courses for Ed-Direct. As far as the NA credits, the more I read in the catalog, I bet you could portfolio them. Check out the catalog it is here - Peru Catalog , the prior learning page is 72 in acrobat. This makes me wonder if I finish my AS in management, I wonder if I could portfolio the credit and just get a second degree from them in business..Hmm... If I check into this I'll let everyone know if it works.

    PSC

I'm currently in my 3rd class in the MS program at PSC and I am very happy with it. As Justin stated, they are a small state school with about 1800 students (about 500 online). This year, they reported a 19.6% increase in enrollments over last year, and their masters program was ranked 4th Best Buy by www.geteducated.com (and the top three are only lower tuition if you live in-state). I think there are some great things happening there and I encourage you (or anyone) to check it out.

I think what I like most is that they value their students' input. My first semester, I was invited to participate in a student advisory group with the Dean of Education. She was very open to all our suggestions and I've seen many of them implemented already.

I e-mailed her with the credit transfer questions and I'll post back here once I hear from her. I'm surprised they didn't answer you earlier; they have always replied to me quickly.

Just of curiosity -- do I remember correctly that it is pronounced "PEE-roo" (in the curious tradition of Cairo (KAY-roh), IL and Buena (BYOO-nee) Vista, CO, etc.?

Every time I've called they've pronounced it "puh-ROO", but maybe the locals say it differently.

    Hello!

I would just like to say THANKS for everyones replies. Peru sounds like a good school to attend. I emailed them with some general questions yesterday but haven't heard back, it could be because it's the weekend.

But does anyone know if they have specific enrollment times?

Also, how do do they the quizzes and finals being we are online? Are you allowed to use books? We never had this at AIU just homework.

I would REALLY like to get started Jan/Feb before I have to start paying back my other loans from AIU which is quite a lot. :(

I have been doing LOTS of research on Peru just because they are soo cheap I figured there had to be something wrong or some sort of drawback, but as far as im finding it's an excellent school. And their online enrollment has doubled!! Just thought I'd share this to see if anyone has any draw back on Peru or to others who may be interested. ANd also the application is free or $10 which is also the cheapest I've found!!!

Regarding fees, there is no application fee and only a one-time $10 enrollment fee which you pay when you send payment for your first courses. There weren't any other fees for the graduate program but I don't know about the undergraduate programs. What program are you interested in? Have you contacted them yet?

I applied to my program about two months before I started and had plenty of time, but again, I don't know about undergraduate programs.

As far as drawbacks, I can only think of one: their online e-mail system sometimes returns a "cannot find server" error message, usually when I first log on. I just refresh and have to log on again and it works fine after that. It's a minor annoyance but I'm willing to put up with it for $143 per credit. :D

They occasionally warn that Blackboard may go down but I've never seen it happen.

    Logank~

I am interested in the Bachelors in CJ. And yes I did contact them with email 2 days ago. If I do not hear back tomorrow afternoon I am going to call them, because I'm not sure how long they give you to enroll or when classes start and I'm assuming they start in Jan.

Yeah I am willing to put up with the email problem also undergraduate is 114 and I read on their page the certain states including MN gets discounts and I live in MN!!

    Thanks for your comments!

    CJ Degree

    Hi Melissa,
Peru runs on a regular semester schedule with the exception of it splits them into two 8 week terms for the accelerated classes. The application dates are the same as a regular school. I just received a reminder in my school email that class sign ups are this week so the sooner you apply the better. I took intro to criminal justice in my first term and I enjoyed it a lot. The prof is an ex-cop and he is very nice. I liked the class more than I expected I would so now I am going to take some more CJ classes because of that experience. So I hope that one class was a reflection on how the rest of them will be.

I received a response from the Dean of Education today. She didn't give me much information on undergraduate credit transfer, probably because they don't offer an online UG degree in education. (I wasn't aware of this.) She did say that interested students could contact Todd Drew, the Dean of Professional Studies, at [email protected] with any questions about their CJ programs.
