    Hi all,

I was wondering what the difference was in the requirements for obtaining a tenure-track vs an adjunct teaching position. As an adjunct, are you required to be published in a well known journal, have a book-deal, and have various awards and honors? While I am certain any of those things can only add to your appeal, are they required? Does the committee expect you to have course outlines and lecture material prepared for the interview?

    Thanks

I can only comment on the adjunct portion.

#1 - It all depends on the University and the supply/demand.

I am an MBA/CPA and have taught MBA classes in my specialty. I have also been told I am not qualified to teach Accounting 101 because I do not have a Doctorate.

The most common criteria I see are:
#2 - That you should have a Master's with 15-18 graduate credits in the area you would like to teach. (I believe this is an RA requirement or at least a rating criteria).

#3 - The looser version is that you have a Master's degree in the subject area with "significant" work experience.

Of course, previous teaching experience is always a plus. Online adjunct positions prefer previous online teaching experience. Publications and awards will add weight to your application, but you still must meet the original requirements.

A master's degree and good timing. If you happen to be there at the right time and moment then you are hired. Unlike tenure track positions, adjuncts are normally not hired by a committe or long interviews. Sometimes you are hired based on your resume and your availability to teach the course.

This truly highlights how stupid the rules are - MBA/CPA and can't teach Accounting 101? I'd rather trust the competency of a student taught by a CPA than a PhD.

That sums it up very nicely.
