Today's Boston Globe reports Yale University will in the Fall of 2006 give a full tuition waiver for every student in their Master's degree program in Music. This is how they will utilize a 100 million dollar gift they have received. It will not include room and board but will cover tuition which is now about 24,000 per year for the 2 year program. ( so saving each student around 5O K) 2nd year students already enrolled will be covered starting in 2006 too.
The article also lists a couple of other schools that are tuition free.
The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia -tuition free since 1928. (accepted 38 out of 700 applicants last year)
The Franklin Olin College of Engineering in Needham, MA. (free tuition -room and board also paid)
and Berea College in KY. ( I believed mentioned here before)
While most universities offer scholarships and other tuition waivers to reduce costs I think it is admirable for Yale to use this money this way. It's crazy how tuition keeps going up -esp. in some of these universities with massive endowments.
These are not distance study degrees but worth knowing about.
    Any aspiring muscians out there?

My first major when I was fresh out of high school was muisic composition, and I've always thought that I might return to music when I retire. But that's not soon at all, and in the meantime, this should be a great opportunity for some.

Same here, Steve. I wasn't exactly "fresh out of high school", though - I was 20 at the time. I've been playing Bass Guitar for almost 20 years now (Man, that makes me feel really old!). lol

    <insert gratutious plug here>

My band is called "XXOXIA" (pronounced ek-zoh-sha). I don't know how many alt. rock fans visit this board, but if you're one of them, check us out here: http://www.xxoxia.com

I agree with laferney - it's extremely admirable of Yale to use their donation in this way. It makes sense to use the money for the students in the Music program. We all know that most Musicians are broke! :D

Now they just need to provide a service whereby said Music Grad students can locate someone's couch to crash on (for free of course!). lol

I'm an alt/indie rock fan...who are your muscial influences? At the moment, I am into The Shins, The Strokes, and The Killers among many others.

    Hi Rhonda,

I'm into alot of different styles of Music. As for Alt. Rock - I'm into Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins, The Mars Volta, Flips (Flaming Lips), Jellyfish (not really alt. rock, but i love 'em!).

My girlfriend loves The Killers. I wasn't all that impressed with them, until I saw footage from their concert on MTV2. They were actually a very good live band (something that is quite rare, nowdays).

I see that we both live in PA.... Small world, eh? I live outside of Philly... What part of the state do you live in?

Anyway, we have a couple of mp3's up on our site now. If you click on the "O" in our name, you'll see the links available for your downloading pleasure (or displeasure!). Give Monster Basement a whirl and lemme know what you think. After over a year (and counting) spent recording our album, I'm beginning to loose all perspective! haha.

But I digress... Sorry for hi-jacking this post. This is supposed to be about Yale's generous contribution to the poor (and educated) musicians of the world!
