GRE preparation

In my quest for an online Masters CJ program, I found that almost all university's require the GRE. The thought of taking this test terrifies me! Other than statistics in college (which I barely passed) I have had no math since high school. What are some good study guides out there? I am not interested in spending $1,000.00 on a Kaplan course. As of now I want to enroll in the University of Cincinnati program in the fall. In conversing with an enrollment advisor via email I was told that there is no minimum GRE score pending prior undergraduate GPA and work experience (which I have). However, I do not want to make a fool of myself with my test results as most other university's have a minimum requirement score of a 1000 for admission. Any advice/help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm math-retarded, and still managed over 1000 on the GRE, cold with no preparation whatsoever. Many programs don't have a minimum score, they're just making sure you're capable of graduate-level work, something I'm not convinced the GRE exam even does.

Didn't take the course, but did pick up the Kaplan study guide/CD for like $35. I thought it was worth it.

Studied about an hour a night for like 2-3 weeks, and did fine (1200). I actually thought the Math was alot easier than the Verbal, and I hadn't had a Math class since '94.

Also, if you do get the guide I personally thought the practice exams included on the CD were a little harder than the actual exam.

There are many books from which to choose to prepare for the GRE.

    Thank you for the responses...

    Sentinel,

I checked amazon and didn't know if certain guides were better than others.

    Thanks

If you go to the GRE site, you can download their test prep material too which is set up just like the GRE.

They also have tons of prompts for practice for the writing section.

I used a book too. I think I got ARCO this time. It also came with a CD that had practice tests on it, but the stuff from the GRE site was really enough material to get the job done.

I would go through the kaplan course if you really want a good score. They don't just teach what's on the test, but they also teach how to pass the test.

I was in the same boat, but the GRE math isn't that bad. Most of the match on the exam is algebra, trig, and a little geometry. Even then, it is not about solving problems, it's all about definitions.

The hard part is the verbal. Read one word you've never heard of from the dictionary each day till you take the exam.

The book I used was published by REA. It was excellent.

Read that book, take the GRE, and then decide if you want to shell out for Kaplan. You probably won't.
