Fort Hays State University

I need to have some information on Fort Hays State University. I tried the previous posts and didn't get anything that popped up.

I know that some had made some comments on it before, but what I need are more specifics. In example, I would like to know if there generous when it comes to transfer credit for the Masters in Liberal Studies (MLS) program. I would like to have some graduate courses that I took considered for transfer to Fort Hays State University.

I guess what I would also like to know if there have been students who have actually took courses or graduated from this program. The part that seems to be of concern to me is that you have to go through a committee and have all your coursework approved in order to proceed in the program.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I like the cost of tuition and that what seems to interest me in considering this program.

I'm not sure why this would be of concern. Most degree programs have a clear set of required courses, other requirements such as languages, humanities, science, etc. and then a certain number of credits for true electives. You wouldn't expect any structured degree program to be substantially different than this, would you? Even independent and interdisciplinary degree programs would require a negotiated course of study that meets certain requirements. As for the issue of transfer credits, most Masters programs won't allow more than 6-9. I don't know what the limit is at Fort Hays. You'll probably find that information either on their website or inside one of those threads that Ted was good enough to list. Good luck.

Additionally, anytime you are attempting to tranfer loose credits (as opposed to completed degrees) you are going to be subjected to course-by-course reviews. That's pretty much going to be a concern at any legitimate university considering transfer credits.

I tend to like the program at fort hays state u. However, I would like to see them increase the numbers of concentrations available.That would be my only complaint. Other than that, it seems to be a good program.

Art, Assistive Technology, Chemistry, Communication Studies, Criminal Justice, English, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Geology/Geography, Gerontology, Health and Human Performance, Information Networking and Telecommunications, Instructional Technology, Mathematics/Math Education, Modern Languages, Music/Music Education, Organizational Leadership, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Science Education, Sociology: Cultural Studies, Social Science Education. Looks like a fairly broad range of liberal studies concentrations. Which other ones would you like?

By a quick count, I see "only" 13 concentrations available in an online format. Still a great selection, but not everything listed above is available to the DL student.

I think Fort Hays is one of the real gems of DL. Now, if they'd just get rid of the goofball Bachelor of General Studies and Master of Liberal Studies degree titles.......

Okay. I did double check. Of the 26 concentrations listed, only 13 (half) are online. Do you know if they mean online as opposed to paper based correspondence cfourses or online as opposed to buttocks on wood education?

 

I would like to see Fort Hays offer more undergraduate concentrations/majors. How about communications/journalism, or marketing?

Also, does anyone know if Fort Hays accepts NA degrees or course work in transfer?

 

I looked into FHSU quite a bit last year, and IIRC, if a concentration isn't available online, that means residency is required.

 

I have decided that I am not going to pursue the Master of Liberal Studies at Fort Hays. The tuition is definately nice, but the fact that you have to work with a committee in order to progress through your program does not appeal to me. I would rather go to a school where you take x amount of courses and can proceed as you wish and as long as you complete those courses you can graduate. If I were going into a Doctoral program then I would certainly understand that you have to work with a committee for your doctorate as they approve the topic you will write about, etc. The committee for the Master of Liberal Studies sounds like it would hold me up by waiting for them to approve the courses that I have taken and to proceed with wanting to graduate right away.
