Just thought I would mention that NCU has changed their course semester terms from 16 weeks to 12 weeks starting January 1st.

This increases the terms from 3 to 4 per year.

Practicum courses, doctoral research, comprehensive and dissertation courses will not be altered and will remain at 16 weeks.

    I thought it was interesting.

12 weeks is usually the length of a quarter. Has NCU gone to the quarter-credit system, or did they stay semester?

    Great...that really screws me.

They have a continuious enrollment rule and I get 4K per year in tuition assistance. I used to pay 500 per year out of pocket. Now it will be 2K.

They stayed in the semester system.

Question: Some online schools like UoP and others are something like 6 or 7 weeks long. Are they on the quarter or the semester system?

My local state university is on the semester system, but for our graduate program, the classes were only 7 or 8 weeks long, intead of the traditional 16 weeks, but the number of required in-resident hours did not change because we were supposed to spend all day Saturday in class, although we did not. Each class was supposed to be 8 hours long on the weekend, but that's a long time to sit in a classroom and, furthermore, it's a long time for a professor to be a talking head, so we usually only stayed in class for about 4 or 5 hours (by class consesus) with the expectation that our time not-in-class would be devoted to academic studies, such as going to the library for academic research. But with the advent of online scholarly library resources, going to the library is like riding a bicycle on the interstate.

One thing I dont like about NCU is they do not participate in Title IV funding. That really knocks out a lot of people who may be lower income and can afford an education at this institution. Many do not have the cash, employer reimbursement, or other means to pay for their education except through federal student aid. I know this is NCU's choice, but it locks a lot of students out of their institution who do not have the adaquate financial resources.

UoP online courses are 5 weeks for undergrad, 6 weeks for graduate. They use the semester credit system.

I will say that UoP doesn't skimp on the work requirements for the accelerated format. I'm teaching Intro to Criminal Justice for UoP right now, and the workload is comparable to the undergrad courses I took, it's just compacted into a 5-week format

That's a good one, I'm going to steal it if you don't mind.
