Are there any new Ph.D programs coming online in the next few years? I heard about North Central; I also heard that JIU is looking into a PH.D prgrams? Distance Learning is taking off, so any update information would be helpful to all.

Antioch University is planning a new Ph.D. program in Leadership and Change. I do not think it is completely off the ground yet.

I checked into the Antioch PhD... a very interesting program... but you'll need to take out a second mortgage on your home to afford it!

I believe Athabasca University is working on a PhD in Distance Learning (through distance learning).

What are they proposing for cost as I have not seen anything yet on their cost model? I found their MA program to be affordable.
With the program still under development the cost may come down.

    Good morning!

According to the package sent to prospective students for the PhD in Leadership and Change program, the following budget was suggested:

    Annual tuition - $16,000
    Books/supplies/subscriptions - $1,000
    Room & board - $2,200
    Transportation - $2,000

    Total - $21,200

According to the "Tuition and Financial Aid" sheet provided by Antioch, the room & board figure covered 14 nights ($100/day for hotel, $50/day for food) and the transportation number covered four residencies at $500/trip.

The program description notes that students must attend four residencies per year for three years. There is a one-week annual session at the main campus in Ohio and three weekend residencies at other sites.

Antioch was quick to respond to my inquiry about the program, and they sent information within hours of my e-mail request. They note that the program is under development, and they even offer a $500/year discount on tuition for those pioneers hardy enough to enter the "advance cohort" of learners. Of course, this discount makes me think that it is unlikely we will see any reduction in tuition costs once the program is fully operational.

Although it is premature to form opinions about the program, this could be an interesting possibility for people interested in organizational development and change, management, and related areas.

If tuition is annual that would mean you can add an additional $32K to the price tag quoted for two additional years of study.

    This is very high priced!

My MA program was $10K and $2.5K of that was returned to the student in the form of an academic budget to cover coursework, school travel, books, etc. for courses taken outside of Antioch.

It has been a while since I received the information from Antioch... and then I'm not sure that I have it here in Colo (I work in Colo but live in S. Calif.)... Will look for it tonite and let you know tomorrow... I recall liking what I saw (curriculum)... but the cost turned me away!
