    Hello Everyone,

I have been searching for awhile now, to no avail, for any post graduate programs (degree granting not certificate) in economics that can be pursued via distance studies.

I may have searched everywhere considering that I have not had any success thus far. I am hoping that the expertise of the people on this site might have some helpful information for me.

    Regards,

    Elyk...

The University of London external program offers several master's level programmes in economics.

    Good luck!

    Good suggestion, Osborne.

And they're relatively affordable and from one of the finest universities in the world.

Stop it with that Brit speak. First "whilst", now "programmes"? At least you're not taking this stuff in person, I can't imagine what a Jewish/East New Mexican/British accent sounds like!

    Hi:

The University of Strathclyde offers a very interesting MSc. in Economic Policy and Management:

    http://www.economics.strath.ac.uk/pg/openmsc/olhome.html

The course director is Roger Perman. When I enquired, he told me that admissions were decided almost immediately.

So you may be able to apply to the October entry if you rush.

    Best of lucks,

    joi

You may want to look at the programs offered at the University of Tasmania, the University of New England, the University of Melbourne and, of course, the University of South Africa. Best of luck.

    Hi

I read the website of the University of Melbourne. However, I don't see any information about offering DL programmes. Can you help showing me the links there?

    Thank you

Yes, well part of the problem is that some of the non-US universities that might be seen as DL options are not really DL options. What I mean by this is that there is a tradition in many UK, OZ and ZA universities of offering "Research-based" graduate degrees. What this means is that there is no formal coursework, just the thesis/dissertation. Under certain conditions these schools have been known to allow enrolled students to conduct their research at a distance. A very, very large distance. Understand? Don't look fir DL programs. They do not necessarily exist. Look for "external" programs or maybe "research" programs or, if you're visiting the ZA schools, look for "telematic" programs. In any case, you can start here,

    Good luck.

    lf,

The University of London doesn't OFFER "programs". They offer "programmes".

I am quite sure that there is a significant difference!

Thanks for your help everyone, it is greatly appreciated.

With respect to the U London and Strathclyde programs, which one would probably carry more weight?...ie which one would probably be more valuable based in the workplace given a career change, which is the more prestigious of the two and finally, would the fact that the U London degree being administered by SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) hurt the degree's perception vis a vis employers if the degree was used for a potential career change? I am from Canada, so I dont know if any of the aforementioned questions really matter in the end.

    Any thoughts?

    Elyko:

UofL is a waorld class university, and will carry more prestige than Strathclyde.

As for being or not best for a career change, you are not in fact comparing equivalent degrees. Although both universities offer applied economic programs, Strathclyde offers a better background, with its Micro, Macro and iIntegrative Economics modules.
It aso offers several interesting concentrations (Business Economics, Industrialisation and Trade, etc), and only one of them is similar to a program offered by London (Environmental Economics). London offers very focused degrees (Financial Economics, Agricultural Economics, Environmental Economics), which would give you more depth, but less general knowledge.

Perhaps if you tell us what you plan to do with your degree Eg. enter the financial sector, becoming an analyst, etc), we can help you more.

    Good luck,

    joi
