Hey gang. About a year ago I remember surfing the web looking for science courses and such and I remember finding a free, internet university where people with similar interests joined together in a message board, discussed topics with someone that was knowledgable in a particular field.

I recently did a google search for something like this, but came up blank. Does anyone remember anything like this?

Back in the early '90's there was a dot-com billionaire who proposed launching a world-class, tuition-free online university. He was going to spend $100 million of his own money to start this venture. Then the dot-com bubble burst...and he lost a lot of his money. Needless to say, the idea never got off the ground.

Free-Ed is an excellent site, the quality of material can vary but much of it is quite good. It would nicely serve the needs of those looking for supplemental reading for courses in progress, help for testing out, or to brush up on any less-than-strong areas before enrolling in for-credit courses.

I know what you are asking about.

I forgot the posters name but, dis_funk_shi_nil or (something or another) knows about it.

MIT's Open Courseware is a good resource for non-credit college-level learning. I have benefitted from its material from the Sloan School of Managements to supplement the readings and lectures in my own MBA program. I wouldn't have made it through financial accounting without it.

Hmm... I think I remember one of those free universities out there. They were called "ArsDigita University" and you can still find them at www.aduni.org

As far as I know they shut down after they failed to gain sponsorship from the commerce... they have since stopped offering the programs in 2001.

    See this too: http://www.globalpolicy.org/ngos/fund/2002/1013donation.htm

    Hope this helps.

Probably he could tell us, but then he'd have to kill us...

Seriously, though, I too would like to know. I'm interested in online and free education apart from actually getting my degree.

Would you say it is virtually cost-free?
