There is also mention of the Harvard Management Company at: http://www.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/09/30/harvard.endowment.ap/index.html Sulla
But, but, but.....they are so non-profit. And you get treated like a student vs. a customer. Keep repeating...."We are a non-profit. We don't want to make money. We don't even really like money. We just want you to come here and gain knowledge. We just love to teach."
In terms of sheer size, Harvard's endowment wins hands down. But according to the Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac, Harvard was only #5 in terms of endowment $ per student, based on 2004 data. #1: Rockefeller University. "Only" $1.4 billion endowment, but only 193 students. So about $7.3 million per student. #2: Olin College of Engineering. A brand new school with $300 million endowment for 150 students. So about $2 million per student. However, their enrollment has since risen to ~300 students, so their ranking in this respect has probably fallen. #3: Princeton University. $10 billion endowment for 6700 students. So about $1.5 million per student. #4: Princeton Theological Seminary. Also in Princeton, but a separate institution; not part of the University. $800 million endowment for 650 students. So about 1.2 million per student. #5: Harvard. $22 billion endowment for 19,000 students, or about 1.15 million per student. Could be up to 1.3 million per student now.
