I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I came here looking for other students of Education Direct and was happy to find a few when reading through some of the post.
I have been going there since August working for my associates in business with an option in finance.

    A little info aobut me:

    I am 33
I have been married for 14 years in December
    I have three boys, 13, 10, and 1
My husband is due to retire from the army in two years, finishing with 23 years of service and I wanted to further my education, so that when he retires he can truely retire and I will begin working, leaving him time to finally restore his mopars. I think he's earned it!

So that's a little about me. I mainly wanted to find a support system as I work my way through an online degree since education direct's customer service is extremely slow.

Hi Melissa, welcome to the forum. Please let us know if you have any questions or if there are any other ways we can help. We have a remarkably diverse membership and it seems that there are at least three people who know something about just about everything.

    Welcome, Melissa.

TCord1964 recently began studies at Education Direct, and has posted alot about it around here. Be sure to hunt-down his posts. They're pretty good.

I did read the thread started by TCord1964 and was thrilled he is taking basically the same classes as I am. In fact he had written that he had started on the big phone book that I am currently waiting on. I noticed it has been a couple of weeks since he updated the tread with how he is currently doing. I must say when I had noticed how thick the book is I was a bit taken aback, TCord forgot to mention the 136 page study guide that you have to read along with it as you move through the chapters.
I'm glad they at least ease you back into the motions of studying with the beginning courses, before throwing you in the lions den.
I'm excited and nervous all at once. So far I am keeping about a 94 average. the questions I missed were as TCord said, not reading the questions thouroughly.
    Thanks, Melissa

Thank you all for the warm welcome. It is one of the reasons I picked this board. I checked out a few others and found myself clucking and shaking my head as if I had overheard one of my boys being ugly to a playmate. I like no drama enviroments and friendly people with a good sense of humor. I'd say this place fits the bill.
    Thanks, Melissa

Hi Melissa, and welcome to the board. It is true I haven't updated my thread lately. I work as a reporter and have been kept busy the past few weeks with a couple of storms named Katrina and Rita. I didn't have to go to Louisiana or Texas, but I have been working on many related stories, nonetheless.

I will eventually update the ED thread I started, but so far I am about halfway through the "Introduction to Business" course. I am still maintaining a 93 average. I'm not progressing as quickly as I would like, but like I said, I've been busy. I was hoping to finish the course in about a month, but it will likely take me more like 6-8 weeks, which, if you think about it, is about how long some accelerated college courses are anyway.

So far, I am extremely pleased with ED, and I have spent some time looking for a school to transfer to when I am finished with the ASB degree. I have narrowed it down to a couple of choices. There is another thread about that on this board. I have already learned quite a bit studying with ED, and the bottom line is that is what it's all about: getting an education.

The reading does get tedious after awhile, but that's where your motivation has to kick in. I guess that's true of all DL programs.

And I think it is safe to say most of us are in one way or another addicted to learning and therefore getting an education.

Yep, I've heard rumors of that before, but I spell it that way too when I'm not being graded for it. Blame it on my southern accent. I'm sure you'll find "alot" more words I have my own special spelling for, just as I have my own special pronunciation. I promise I will always spell the word Oil as oil though, because I couldn't begin to figure out how to spell it the way I say it.
LOL, I've got to admit, this reminds me of my grandmother who taught english and returned my letters with red corrections marked on them. I send flowers now instead...

    Hi Melissa, and welcome!

Please thank your husband for me, for his years of service to his country. He's earned a restful retirement!

You are correct. "A lot" is two words; and there is no such word as "alot." The easy way to remember is to contemplate the converse word "alittle." There is no such word as "alot," just as there is no such word as "alittle."

That said, "alot" appears in some dictionaries, either as an example of incorrect usage, or as a non-standard usage. Some readers, here, who are up in years may remember (or, perhaps their parents may remember) a time when teachers would say, obviously incorrectly, that if you mean the opposite of "a little," then use "alot" because "a lot" refers to something on which one would build a house.

This incorrect admonition/counsel contributed to the rise in popularity of the non-word "alot"... to the point that it's now become a word in some circles... but a non-standard one.

I use "alot" a lot... when I know, full well, that I should use "a lot" instead. Throughout these threads, in fact, one will find my use of both... although more "alot" than "a lot." Of course, I know "alot" is wrong... but I type it anyway. Go figure.

Wrong is wrong, of course. I type so fast and don't really proof as much as I should. It's always been a difficult habit for me to break; and I confess that I tend to justify it when I notice that I did it by pointing-out to myself that it's not wrong, it's just non-standard. But, of course, it's wrong.

"Oil" in a southern accent = "Awl"
