Anyone know of any distance learning Arabic courses out there? I'm looking to at least take a first course in Arabic. Thanks!
I can't point out classes, and I'malso dubious that classes on Arabic can be done effectively over distance. Like other languages difficult for English speakers to pronounce, feedback on proper pronunciation is going to be vital. However I can give you the advice to look for classes that use this textbook: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0878402926/002-1060138-5934469?v=glance The authors have been associated with the Middlebury Language School (which is THE best and quickest way to learn Arabic within the United Sates) and have practically revolutionized the field of Arabic language teaching. I'm sure self-studying or Independent Learning to learn Arabic letters is possible, but if you are really serious about getting up to a decent level in the language you may have to find a physical class.
I agree on the pronunciation aspect. My main goal is to be able to make a good start at being able to read it.
Hi Bing: Check out the University of Africa website: www.unisa.ac.uk You will find a schools within it that offers courses in Arabic, Midde Eastern Studies, Islamic Sutdies and even Mandarin Chinese!!! Apparently, you can even earn a BA with a major in Arabic. I am fluent in almost all romance languages and, I you allow me, I would like to suggest you attend a physical class or hire a tutor. Also, if you are interested in Islam, take a look at the University of Wales, Lampeter MA in Islamic Studies: www.lamp.ac.uk Hope this helps, ioi
Bing. Try the webpages below: http://www.arabicstudies.edu/index.shtm http://www.worldwidelearn.com/language-courses/african- arabic-language.htm http://islam.about.com/od/arabiconlinecourses/
With all due respect to joi, it is the University of South Africa and the correct url is http://www.unisa.ac.za Otherwise his information is correct. Jack
Thank you, Jack This is what happens when one writes totally exhausted. Bing, I apologize for the mistake, which I myself cannot explain, as I am applying to the University of South Africa. By the way, you will find a thread I opened on UNISA's language courses and their reputation of having a complex admissions process, in which Jack offered some useful advice. You will find it here: http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21075 There's also an institution called IACI in Canada, which offers UNISA's programs to Canadian and overseas students. However, they never responded to the 3 emails I sent them, which is the reason why I decided to apply directly to UNISA. I hope this helps. Good luck, Joi, who has written this reply in Word, edited it and proof-read it to avoid any additional embarrassment
Bing, Not to hijack the thread and I know you have an MBA, but you obviously have an interest in the language so though you might be interested to know that Edinburgh Business School (HW) will next year offer an MBA in Arabic. Heriot Watt Arabic MBA Peace, Dave C.
