NCU's policy of tuition assistance

As noted previously, NCU's tuition assistance to individual's whose education was disrupted by Katrina is highly commendable.

NCU has another tuition assistance program that is available only to federal government employees. This means that any federal employee, regardless of the fact that they may earn a high salary (some federal government employees earn six figure salaries and significant benefit, health and retirement packages) can also receive a substantial 50% reduction in their tuition whereby for example, a municipal state employee earning significantly less; a person who is unemployed or layed-off; or a student who does not have the financial means, would not be entitled to such a generous tuition package.

It would be good if NCU could develop a more inclusive policy that could possibly allow other prospective students who otherwise could not afford to attend their programs, to be eligible for similar discounted tuition fees on par with federal employees.

As a government employee I approached them about a tuition reduction, given the tuition break for cops. They slammed the door in my face. That sucked but now I get some tuition reimbursement so cost isn't as critical. If I were paying out of my own pocket Touro is the clear cut winner at $187.50 per credit. As it turns out I'm leaning towards Salve Regina because they offer a certain quantity of self paced courses.

NCU's policy doesn't seem quite fair though, since the feds pay scale is usually light years ahead of state and local government wages. (About $20-30,000 per year in my classification.)

You'd think they'd offer assistance to those who could least afford it.

In fact, NCU's tuition assistance reduction policy for police and firemen no longer exists.

    Interesting.

I was wondering whether Touro would yank the reduced tuition plan in the future and my contact told me that the rate structure for gov't employees is intended to be permanent.

    Simon,

Please post a link to the site that outlines the details for federal government employees.

    Thanks

I just confirmed the policy regarding Federal Employees. It only recently went into effect and the website is not updated with the information. No word on how long the discount will last but the rates are attractive.

One of the best ways to establish a new university is to get its degrees into the hands of:
    - public officials
    - Federal employees
    - police officers & fire service personnel
    - etc.

When numerious reputable people all hold degrees from a particular institution, it raises the legitimacy and reputation of said school. It is a form of networking on the part of Dr. Hecht. It's all about money and its an investment in the future and this is done by giving scholarships and tuition discounts to induce these folks to enroll and, hopefully, graduate. It's business 101. I could be in left field on this, but that's my speculation.

I think you are right. Since I own a business in the private sector I pay full tuition.

I have no problem with the government people getting a break. I much prefer this strategy to pop-ups and other Internet ads all over the place.

    Just my opinion.

That didn't seem to help much with Flaming Rainbow University. They went after this type of crowd...especially firefighters.

There are many unscrupulous business owners who know how to make a buck. Just because someone knows how to market something doesn't necessarily make the product legitimate.

As noted, police and firemen are no longer eligible for this special tuition reduction.

Wasn't Flaming Rainbow an RA school, though? Not an unscrupulous business? Although, from my experience many RA schools would easily fit that unscrupulous "business" bill.

The deal was too good to be true, so that's probably why the window of opportunity was only open for a brief moment!!!!

Simon, have you been in contact with a staff member at NCU in regards to the termination of tuition reduction for law enforcement officers? What is the webpage that I may refer to that mentions the discontinuation of tuition reduction for law enforcement officers?

Here is a webpage that details the tuition scholarship program for law enforcement officers:

I contacted Susan Penn over at NCU. She advised the tuition reduction program for law enforcement and fire services is still in effect.

As noted on the webpage in question, there is a general statement regarding tuition assistance for police and firemen. HOWEVER, on the side there is a directory of partnerships with SPECIFIC police and fire departments that this policy applies to. So as far as I am aware unless a partnernership has been established with a specific fire or police department this offer does not appear to apply.

You know, if this is the case then I bet getting that discount easy. I have no doubt that a phone call is all it will take to get the paperwork started and the discount in hand. And, we aren't talking paperwork like Colorado State University would require. Likely it's a simple form.

My experience with NCU administration is that they will do what the student needs, if at all possible. There are some on the forum with experience in NCU's partner discount. These people got it for their organizations and can probably help point others in the right direction.

Your observation is a good one, though, Simon.

Your department does not have to be on NCU's partnership-list for you to receive a tuition reduction. The only eligibility requirement is that you be a full-time cop or fireman. I've got to give credit where credit is due: the scholarship program makes the pursuit of education a financial possibility for many cops.
