A friend recently began his studies at a local ITT Tech school in our area. I visited their web site but couldn't find any info regarding accreditation. My friend states that they are fully accredited, which makes me wonder if it's RA, NA or none at all. Does anyone know?

    ITT is an NA school.

ITT was also recently handed a class action lawsuit from former students and also was under attack by the USDE for admitting underqualified students and changing grades and attendances.

And i believe the charges where dropped as well. I personally never saw any of that when I was attending ITT back in the late 90's, though when I was attending the Orlando (Maitland) campus I heard all sorts of horror stories about the Miami campus.

ITT tech is accrediated by ACIS(Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools)http://www.acics.org/

which is CHEA and DOE recognized.

Of course someone knows. Fortunately, there's an easier way than just asking around to find out precisely who knows what.

To determine if any institution is approved by the US Department of Education's Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), just look-up said institution in the CHEA database.

If you simply type "ITT" into the "Institution name:" box and specify no other criteria, then just click on the "Search for Institution" button, you get a list of seventy-something locations and their specific accreditations. Click here to see the Miami location's accreditation information.

There is also a US Department of Education (USDE) database, but for some reason it's down at this writing. The CHEA database has always been the more reliable one. However, theoretically, the USDE database should be more complete because there are a tiny handful of accreditors that are USDE-approved, but not also CHEA-approved; while there are no CHEA-approved accreditors that are not also USDE-approved. So I always try to use the USDE database, but I've grown weary of its inaccuracies and occasional, inexplicable downtime... so I tend to just use the CHEA database and be done with it. You can probably do the same; but just know that, technically, the USDE database should be (and the operative word, here, is "should") better and more complete.

Thanks for the replies. I am under the assumption my friend believes ITT is RA. When I asked him about the accreditor for ITT he stated it was the same accreditor that accredits all State universities, which obviously is not the case. In Florida it's SACS. Anyway, I'll let him know because I believe he intends to teach in the future and from other post I've read one needs an RA degree to teach.

The advertisements I have seen on television show a message "Limited transferability of credits." Therefore, the school is most likely not RA and this is confirmed by checking the database at CHEA.

Perhaps it is not too late for your friend to withdraw from ITT and go to another, more properly accredited institution. I say this because for the talk about acceptance of DETC accredited degrees, I think there is even less acceptance of ACICS accredited degrees.

For example, I have spoken with plenty of Ashworth College grads who have transferred into an RA school. I have yet to encounter a single ITT Tech grad who has been able to transfer into an RA institution. On top of that, there is the cost. I have heard of ITT students paying nearly $30,000 for an Associate of Science degree.

You can find out about the experiences of others firsthand at www.ripoffreport.com . Granted, my institution is also listed there, as well as Ashworth. You'll find disgruntled students from several different distance learning institutions there. But, the complaints about ITT seem to be consistantly similar.

From what I have heard for profit schools like UOP will give you transfer credit to ITT students.

Again, not everyone that has an ITT degree want to go any further. You can actually get an MBA from ITT. I have to admit it is and expensive school, but I knew just as much about circuit design as the EE's I worked with at a tier one computer company.

I really liked the ITT campus I went to, all of the instructors (well except maybe one or two of them) where excellent. Alot of my class mates where offered well paying jobs right out of school, and the FBI and CIA hired several of my classmates. I have to admit i was less than pleased with my ITT Maitland, but that degree did get me about 10 interviews. I eventually took the offer with the Tier one computer company doing product development. Though I did have a nicer offer from XO communications, i just didn't like the hours.

I am going to ITT tech right now. I do like the school. You go to classes 5 hours a day, usually 2 days a week with 1 online course for your general education classes like English and Math.

2 hours is for lecture in a classroom, then you move to a lab for 3 hours and get to do hands on training with Computer repair, Cisco Switches and Routers, Programming, Operating Systems training, etc.

I am learning a lot at the school, but I realize that it is not seen as a big higher learning facility, more of a tech school with Job training.

You do have to take 2 classes of english, Problem Solving, College Math I and II, etc. as part of the Computer networking program. I know that the EE guys have to take Physics courses, etc. The bachelors progam has you taking classes like Psychology, Economics, Etc.

I really like the institution. A large part of your grade comes from showing up and doing the Hands on labs and working with the Hardware and Software, about 30%. So the school gives you more points for hands on stuff rather than memorizing for tests and quizes like most schools. The thing is that is exactly what the school advertises to it's students, so it should not be a suprise.

I really enjoy the school. I am not going to stay for the Bachelors in Information Security, but only because another tech school close by offers a similar program with NSA credentials. Also with my Gen ed Transfer credits I can finish that other program in 8 months as apposed to 24 more months at ITT. They are on an accelorated schedule and I will have to go to school 4 days a week 6 hours a day as apposed to 2 days a week 5 hours a day. Cheaper and Faster in the end.

Does this mean your next school is going to accept transfer credits from ITT?

hmm well, I have lots of gen ed classes completed from a regionally accreddited school. But the Tech school I am going to will recognize the associates degree and the classes I took at it because it is also ACICS accredited.
