We have discussed the term "deemed university" here in the past. Here's a definition:

• Deemed University is a status of autonomy granted to high performing institutes and departments of various universities in India. It is granted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.
  
  The Deemed University status enables not just full autonomy in setting course work and syllabus of those institutes and research centres but also allows it to set its own guidelines for the admissions, fees and instruction of the students.
  
  The parent Universities of these deemed universities cannot control its administration, though the degrees of deemed universities are awarded by the parent universities.

I can't believe you're discussing that in this forum. Starbucks is nationally accredited by the AJPE (Association of Java Producing Entities) and we all know that NA means nothing.

If it is not RA, like WACS or SACS (Western Association of Coffee Shops or Southern...) then it is crap.

Well, of course there could be beverage specific accreditation like the Special Higher Institute for Teas, but that is for that beverage only -and although national in scope- the whole shop cannot be considered accredited, just the -in this case- teas.

 

Thanks much, oxpecker, for the new (to me) information. Now, does any one know if this organization is truly one such--and which is the "parent" university? SVCET or the other one? How is quality control exercised over a deemed university (either by UGC or the 'parent" school)?

What was the source of the text in the first post in this thread. It seems to have been quoted from somewhere without attribution.

I don't see Srivenkateswara College of Engineering and Technology included among the 179 NAAC accredited colleges in Tamil Nadu.

Apparently there are only 12 NAAC accredited universities in Tamil Nadu, and this Vinayaka Mission's Research Foundation - Deemed University doesn't seem to be one of them.
