In one of the other threads, someone mentioned Open University in the UK. I recently did a search for some of the UK DL programs and noticed a number of different programs. Accreditation is totally different over there, so what should one look for when considering a UK school? Anyone have any experience with any of them? I'm starting a DL course in Cosmology (for fun) in October at the University of Central Lancashire, so I'll be able to provide some feedback about them.

You want to look for the Royal Charter.

Re: Re: The UK DL Programs.

Just looking for a Royal Charter is probably an overly simplified view.

From the Privy Council's list of charters granted, I was unable to find terribly many of the new universities and former polytechnics listed.

Perhaps a better way is for the college in question to be mentioned DFES website as a recognised or listed body.

Be warned though that it povides names, nothing more and there are some less than wonderful organistations with similar sounding names (the European Business School comes to mind)

It's real simple: If the UK school's not listed on either this web page, or this one, then proceed with extreme caution.

And, yes, Greg, what JamesK said is very true.

Most UK universities established before 1992 operate under a Royal Charter. Many UK universities or other institutions of higher learning established after 1992 operate under an Instrument and Articles of Government. There are some exceptions for some of the Scottish and 'ancient' universities. Any UK institution using the word 'university' in its name must have the approval of the Privy Council to do so.
