After reading many of the postings here, I just wanted to place this poll to see what the different motivations are for pursing distance learning. Please be honest!

You needed a couple of more choices....

I am actually an education addict that is trying to use my current degree (in progress) to get ahead in a new profession.

I am pursuing an MBA to advance my business career, but also I've always wanted to do an MBA, even if just for fun.

I hope to someday pick back up on my doctorate in theology for fun, just for the pursuit of learning.

The Bachelor's was by distance because no local school was even close to the convenience or transfer credit acceptance that I got through Charter Oak -- whose praises I cannot overstate!

The Master's is more or less a degree in distance learning, so it would almost be strange to earn it by a different modality.

    Working on a DL MBA.
Just something I wanted to do for myself.

Own my company so have no need for it. Beats the heck out of watching TV!

I'm on Distance MBA program just to advance my career goal in my present organisation, but for my dreams to be a PhD holder in the future is to join the league of the holders of this prestigious achievement.

I would like to advance my career, however there is no set formula for that. So I guess my answere is:

I love to learn, but can't wait to finish up my goals. I've got something to prove to MYSELF...I find education equals confidence (at least with me).

I had a terrible B&M experience with a couple of local Colleges and decided there had to be a better way...and Dr. Bear showed me there was.

I would also like to be marketable.

I find that educated people (not necassarily "diploma-ed")are easier to work with and like to surround myself with them.

    • I got a Bachelors because everyone else in my family had one and I was the black sheep without one.
    • I got a Masters because:
      a) the opportunity presented itself and
      b) I was somewhat addicted to climbing the educational ladder.
    • If I get a doctorate, it will be because:
      a) It may open doors in the future and
      b) It may teach me something relevant - and it may not.

My sister got herself an MDiv and complained that she was making less than I, at the time still a perennial undergrad, since those were the irrationally exuberant days of the dot-com bubble and I was an IT guy.

There's been a lot of wilting since those salad days, of course, and now it will be fun to catch up and surpass Reverend Sister academically just because that way she'll have something new about which to complain.

But seriously, I saw what she had to do to get that MDiv (Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.), and it looked hard! I asked her once if she were interested in a doctorate and she said something like, "Uh, maybe later."

    Hi -

I'm the one person (thus far) who answered "I am earning my absolute first degree and distance learning was my only option."

I am very interested in a number of subjects, which really makes it tough to choose a major! I'm 32 (with 33 approaching next month) and my "educational clock" is ticking! With family, work and other responsibilities, attending a B&M school is out. Therefore, I've been searching for a good online school that offers something of interest to me. I'm a former EMT, and I've always been interested in Healthcare and Science. If I had my choice I would have become a PA (Physician's Assistant). However, until they offer a virtual PA school program (which will probably not happen in my lifetime!), I have decided to pursue a different area of study.

Just recently, I decided to go with Psychology as my undergrad degree and I will be starting classes next month (hopefully) at National University online. I have always been interested in how the mind works, so this should be a a fun and interesting topic to study. My goal is to obtain a Bachelor's degree in a topic that interests me. My secondary goal is to broaden my employment opportunities.

Ultimately, I would like to obtain my MPH and work in either Community Health or Epidemiology. Thanks to Dr. Gulick for the information on the MPH program offered through AT Stills University. Even though it's a long way off, I'm already looking at online MPH programs!

    Take care,
    Tom

I could've written your post Tom

though I think I'm going with the social science after all, I'm already 33, and my family responsibilities include 7 children, two of them under the age of 17 months. So a B&M isn't all that realistic for me. Pursuing my degree this way gives me the option of staying home with my children until I'm working. Laura

The pursing is from love. The pursuing is from ambition.

I'll bet there is a whole lot more pursing in a B&M environment. Goes along with grade inflation. :)

Sorry... I will have one of my medical students proofread my postings from now on. :D

Incidentally, I caught that typo and went back to edit it as soon as the message was posted. However, someone in their infinite and infallible wisdom has decided that it is not appropriate to edit messages on this board after 10 minutes of pressing submit. Grrrrrrrrrr... Unfortunately, it took more than 10 minutes to come up with all of those choices (I am a slow thinker) so the message was "uneditable".

There will be plenty more typos to come, I promise. ;)
