I need to call and very this, but my interpretation of the residency requirements for the PhD program at the University of Alabama at Huntsville is that the student must either:

    1) Complete 9 hours in two consecutive semesters

    or

    2) Complete 6 hours in 3 out of 4 consecutive semesters.

They make no mention of having to actually take these courses on campus!

Their PhD program is offered by the department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and offers the following tracks or majors:

    1) Industrial Engineering
    2) Systems Engineering
    3) Engineering Management

The tuition for this program is graduated depending on the geographical region you live in. These costs are shown below as the cost per 3 hour course:

2003–2004 Tuition (per 3 hour course)
    –Local DL $845
    –AL, TN, MS $868
    –East of MS River $914
    –West of MS River $932
    –Pacific Coast $1085

They just graduated their first class of DL PhD students which consisted of 9 students. I will post a follow-up after I've spoken to someone to further clarify the residency requirements.

In response to my question on residency, here is an answer to my email:

Now I'm wondering whether I want to do a 2nd masters in Engineering Management or to do a PhD. Hmmmm.....

Ha! Impeccable logic. Very good. Quite above-average... pun intended. :p

And, as long as we're taking the pricing logic to task, isn't "AL, TN, MS" East of the Mississippi River? And isn't the "Pacific Coast" West of the Mississippi River? Shouldn't, then, "AL, TN, MS" be $914, and the "Pacific Coast" be $932?

    Just askin'.

    Gregg,

your missing the southern logic gene. While the Pacific Coast is west of the Mississippi the additional cost is for translating the courses into liberal context for folks in California to understand the material.

The additional costs for East and West of the Mississippi are incurred because the materials must come off the gambling riverboats at Memphis and are Fedexed to the end location.

The rate for AL, TN, MS is the same since we all share the same gene pool and really wouldn't want to mess with our cousins.

The local DL cost is for the standard logging truck delivery.

Surprisingly, we missed the north and south of the Mason-Dixon line option.

All joking asside, nobody has really commented on the fact that even at the highest rate, the UAH is much cheaper per credit hour than places like NCU, UOP or NSU. Plus UAH doesn't have a negative connection with with the term "virtual university." I think these three PhD programs are quite a bargain.

    JoAnn,

UAH has a sound reputation and access to some great government research opportunities here with NASA. The only downside to UAH is that they have limited PhD areas, and limited DL. But they are very focused on what they offer.

On a side note several schools in Alabama do not have a reputation as to what most consider to be "Southern". UAH is one of these schools. The history of UAH is really quite interesting.

Also, While the tuition is posted as noted remember the Southern Regional Education Board. www.sreb.org

You might be able to do better by contacting your state rep since the UAH program is not availble from Florida schools. My understanding is that resident tuition (local DL in this case) might be a possibility for programs not available in your state.
