The first 100% online university to become regionally accredited. And they did it rather quickly, too.

A university is a collection of scholars. Where those scholars meet, whether face-to-face or in cyberspace--is not material. Getting a degree from JIU is like getting a degree from National, Strayer, or any other school no one ever heard of.

Be much more concerned about the nature of not only distance study, but online study. It is not for everyone. But for whom it is, JUI specializes in it.

I took several grad courses at JIU and they were, without exception, outstanding. The professors I had (all of mine were PhD or ABD) were knowledgeable both in content and in teaching online. The course management system (their own) was exceptional (and believe me I've seen a few).

My college soph kid is thinking about finishing his bachelors online at JIU. He's planning to take one course that he finds particularly interesting this fall just to see how he does with DL while finishing up at local comm college here. I'd rather him take a course at JIU than several other places I know about.

Having taught online and finished a masters online -- I've had experiences with many different types of courses and instructors. I have to tell you -- JIU does it right. Unless things have changed in the past 15 months -- the courses and profs are top notch. In fact, I would love to teach for JIU because of the quality of the courses.

In what way would it be more of a degree factory than Union, Phoenix or City?

I am not sure it is more of a degree factory but we are not exactly talking about the Ivy leagues here, if you get my drift.

I'm sure he considers those degree factories also, considering they're US DL schools.

Chip, Chip where are you... I have been unfairly mocked!

No Bruce, they would be factories if they were located in Lithuania also.

Jones International has no physical campus. This has been the stigma of many degree mills. Yet, because it is accredited there seems to be no great concern about their having no physical campus; interesting! I have to agree with many on here who have made statements about it's not where one learns, it's what one learns. I am sure Bible Colleges and Seminaries who have physical campuses but are not accredited have many on their faculty who, for the most part, graduated from non-accredited schools, know Middle and Near Eastern geography far more superbly than the Ivy Leaguer, President George Bush. I am not sure one who graduates from, say Bethany Theological Seminary in Dothan, Alabama, discredits one who graduates from Princeton Theol. Sem. People discredit themselves. Anyway, we all have the freedom of choice to attend the school of our choice. Whether we want to admit it or not accredited schools have gov't sanction and the gov't has no constitutional authority in education. Anyway, gov't sanctioning, at least to me, is the "kiss of death." The gov't can't deliver the mail on time, they can't keep drugs out of prison and they have ruined American elementary and secondary education. Every since the gov't became involved in education test scores have declined, school discipline has become a joke and local control has become nearly nil.

I'm not qualified to say if they're a factory or not, but they've definitely got one of the worst names for a university ever. "Jones International" sounds like a good name for a nail fabrication firm but it just doesn't do it for a serious college or university. Their crest/logo is no better.

I think that you are confusing two very different things:

    1. Not offering traditional on-campus instruction.

    2. Not having any discernable address at all.

The general opinion around here seems to be that its fine for schools to offer programs by DL that they don't simultaneously offer in classrooms, so long as the programs are credible. That's what Jones does. But Jones certainly has a physical address that anyone interested can go visit.

And there is also general agreement that it is foolish to get a "degree" from a school whose published address turns out to be a mail forwarding service.

It's kind of bizarre to have a degree from a university without knowing where the university is located or even what country it's in.

    Thanks for the input!

I have now started my Masters at JIU, and I agree that the staff have been professional and top of the line. I also agree, the name is not well thought out, but I'm not as interested in a name as I am in getting a masters. Thanks again!
