I found this interesting masters degree at the University of Wales, Lampeter Department of Philosophy.

How relevant would it be in today's labour market? Has the wave of corporate scandals (MCI Worldcom, Enron, HealthSouth and the like) caused a renewed interest in this frequently forgotten area?

Are there any similar programs in the UK or abroad?

Has somebody in the forum studied with Lampeter? They seem to be quite prestigious.

This Masters degree has left me reflecting on the issue of ethics in business and in society in general.

Joi - Lampeter has a Masters program in Medical Ethics as well as one in the Ethics of Life and Death. Other programs programs in "applied ethics" can be found at
    Monash University (Bio-Ethics)
    U of Warwick (Mental Health)
Charles Sturt U (Ethics and Legal Studies)
To me these are some of the most important areas of inquiry in academia (as well as the real world). They are interdisciplinary, they are culturally derived and they are subject to evolutionary forces.

I agree with you, Jack. Although I know very little about philosophy, I am enroled in a BSc. in Economics with the University of London External Programme, and normally read history in my spare time.

In the first case, one needs to know some basic formal logic in order to understand how economists actually think(positive economics), but must also be very carefully when debating socially sensitive issues from an ideological standpoint (normative economics), as it is quite easy to use your knowledge selectively in order to win a debate or gain support for your position.

In the second, since I read mostly biographies of Nazi and Communist leaders, as well as history from 1789 to our days, I have become increasingly aware of the dander of realpolitik(or real anything from a Machiavelan point of view).

Although we live in a far from perfect world, I think we must always act according to certain principles, so such a Masters degree ( in any of the fields you mentioned, according to a student's profile) can have very positive effects well beyond professional development.

Thanks for the Medical Ethics info. Although I'm a MD, I intend to change my professional activity, but still think this is a great program. Have you gone beyond your BA at Harvard or plan to do so?

Airtorn, thanks for the info. I'll look into the Duquesne program. today.

    Strongly, strongly agreed.

I'm sorry, but I just have to ask (and if you don't mind answering): Why? And to what? And if it's none of my business, that's okay, too... but I just had to ask.

I mind neither the question nor the answer, DesElms.

In fact, I have already answered to a certain extent to Jack tracey in another thread I opened.

Basically, I am not the hospital type. I feel I can best develop my potential in the business and(later) international/political field.

I am still modelling by short and medium term career objectives, so I am still searching for programs and potential careers, lthough I am increasingly inclined to focus both in the international arena, specifically in the Asia Pacific Area, particularly but not exclusively China.

Do I feel I wasted 6 years of hard study and thousands of dollars in training? Most definitely not. I am very respected due to my MD and to the fact that I graduated Summa Cum Laude despite being almost blind during my internship year( I completed most of that year without being able to read or write).

I think the medical training thoroughly changed my vision of life. I feel i am much more sensitive to other people, I have greatly developed my reasoning and study skills, and I can work or study 80-90 hours a week without blinking. I also noted that an MD training has given me a sense of equilibrium not unlike the ones you notice when listening to an economist speaking. Balance is vital in life, whether in political and public life (as the American Constitution checks and balances show), economics (just see what the twin deficits are doing to the most powerful nation in history) or in personal life(as the rate of divorces of doctors clearly show).

So I am happy to be a doctor and at the same time even happier of opening a new path in my life. I am sure we all know people who would like to change careers, to live in another country, or to radically change their lives, but never get to begin. I have promised myself I will always listen to my inner voice, and not become a prisoner of circumstances, other people's opinions, or fear, and that's what gives me so much drive.

I hope this answers your question. I cannot extend myself much longer because I begin my Online Masters in Public Policy and Management with York University, but if you have any doubts, just open an off-topic thread and I will participate in it.

This is the thread in which I answered Jack Tracey's question:

Sorry, but I am still learning to be conversant with online discussions.

    Good luck,

Interesting... and much clearer now. Thank you.

And good luck in both your search, and your new beginning.

I received a response from the Programme Director today.

Apparently, he was not happy at all that I sent him 22 questions about the program. However, the info contained in the website is quite vague (no course descriptions. for instance). Additionally, much of the info he gave me contradicts the one I found in the website. For instance, the website states there are limited bursaries available for overseas sutdents, and he told me there were none!!!!.

So I sent him another email mentioning these issues.

Not a nice way to begin an academic relationship.

The programme director wrote to me again.

He confirmed me there are no bursaries because, since Thatcher's era, universities have been underfunded and many philosophy departments have even closed, so the info on the website, offering bursaries, was out of date and he would update it.

Thatcher hit the road in 1992. When was the last time this department updated its website?

Also, the info on fees is outdated, and the current fees are approx. 12%, or GBP1000, higher

I think the Ethics side of Business Ethics is essential ,but that does not mean the Business side is to be forgotten.

I feel quite disappointed with this.
