I'm writing a story about accreditation mills, and am specifically interested in learning more about Maxine Asher and WAUC. I live in Henderson, where the main office is, and just found out that it exists. If anyone can fill me in on some stuff, please email me. Thanks!

Plese search and review the threads of this board for a great deal of information about that subject. Also, consider www.google.com for the a.e.d. newsgroup threads about the same.

WAUC is not recognized as an accrediting agency by either the US Dept of Eduction nor CHEA. Therefore, schools accredited by WAUC are not considered "accredited." Nor are they equal to recognized institutions of higher education in other countries.

The efficacy of WAUC accredition has also been widely discussed, along with the nature of some of the schools WAUC accredits. Their website is http://www.web-hed.com/wauc/.

You might also want to search the web using your favorite search engine. Mine is www.google.com.

    Good luck.

One other thing. Please visit their office in Henderson and report back what you find there. When I visited their "office" on Sahara Blvd in Las Vegas back in 1997, they weren't there at all. The address was a mail-forwarding service that also rented office space by the hour. They told me Dr. Asher wasn't ever there; she had her mail (the WAUC's) forwarded to her in Los Angeles.

Since there have been a lot of threads on Asher/AWU/WAUC in the past, I haven't been inclined to contribute to this one. But I have just been trying the search engine for this site and have again found that it seems to work very poorly, despite my trying a variety of different sorts of searches.

Your best bet, Kate, for finding what you want on this site is to either laboriously go through all the pages of past threads, or to do the searches in google, and then once you find a degreeinfo reference, click on the option that allows you to look at all related pages from the site. The former would probably be most satisfyingly thorough, but might take you a while.

Since you might not have had the time to pore over this site, or might have missed something, I have just done the heavy lifting of finding the majority of pertinent threads. You might like to look over the site to see if I have missed anything threads relating to each and every World Association of Universities and Colleges (WAUC) university, but what we have here is most of the stuff: threads on Asher, the WAUC, American World University (AWU), WAUC members, and universities run by Asher business partners. Two or three of these threads are simply jokey carping, but most contain information that will be of value for anyone researching these matters. Herewith:

(The mention of association between Asher/WAUC and former Carter ambassador to Mexico Julian Nava is somewhat misleading because Mr. Nava does not, when examined closely, really lend much gravitas to Asher's operations. Mr. Nava, too, is a somewhat fringe figure, whose association with Asher seems to date from when they were both at Pepperdine--where Asher, without any Ph.D., was an adjunct instructor, and was busy discovering Atlantis. The association of both with Pepperdine appears to have ended soon after Asher's splashy, widely publicized "discovery" of Atlantis, and Nava took part in Asher's Atlantis projects as a fellow director of her Ancient Mediterranean Research Association, which despite its lofty name is devoted in equal parts to Atlantis and the flakiest forms of New-Age thought ("right brain" thinking that allows one to commune with the "spirit world," etc.). Nava at some point ran for mayor of Los Angeles, but his candidacy was treated in the press as very much a fringe one--in part because at the time of the L.A. riots he had advocated martial law until people "learned how to behave themselves." (That's either a direct quotation or a close paraphrase.)) http://www.degreeinfo.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000285.html http://www.degreeinfo.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000262.html
