They don't pay their bills, either. I mean, I'm sure there are some that do -- many, even... maybe even most -- but when I ran a medical x-ray supply company years ago, almost all the deadbeats in the deadbeat file were chiropractors. And trust me when I tell you, NEVER LET A CHIROPRACTOR GIVE YOU AN X-RAY! They usually don't have a qualified x-ray technician on site and so they tend to expose you to too much radiation... either because they set the machine wrong or because they don't keep it calibrated and maintained properly. I've seen knobs on x-ray machines turned to numbers that, if actually used to take pictures, should have left the patients glowing; and/or, the knobs were set right, but the machine was so out of calibration that it was as if they weren't. It made the hair stand-up on the back of my neck.

By the way... know who always pay their bills on time? Veterinarians and dentists... not necessarily in that order. The only problem with dentists is that every now and then they'll commit suicide and leave an outstanding balance. That can suck. Veterinarians, on the other hand, always have smiles on their faces. They seem content... and tend to have good credit, overall.

    But I digress... yet again.

So what you are saying is...

So if I want to get an x-ray I should go to a veterinarian?

That is some interesting bits of info.

    ~takes notes~

Actually, I'm in medical sales and can tell you some stories that would scare the crap out of you.

I have seen well-off Docs risk people lives just to save $30 per procedure when it had very little overall impact on their revenues.

    Sad stuff.

it scares me when I see people trust so-called experts just because of their credentials.

    be careful out there people.

Only if you want to have your temperature taken in your butt, get shots in your neck, and have the doctor tell you that he can significantly lower your chances of ever getting an enlarged prostate if you'll just let him chop-off your balls.

I'd recommend the dentist, but to get a good chest x-ray he has to take many tiny films and then tape 'em all together. Not only is it expensive and time-consuming, but by the time he's done you've accumulated several lifetime's worth of milirads.

    :)

My wife has had chronic back problems since her pregnancy, which is understandable, considering she carried twins that were over 6lbs each at birth.

In desperation, she went to a chiropractor, and after 3 visits, she felt better than she has in years. You can't argue with results.

    I think the most telling part of the article was;

In 1990, a federal appeals court found that the American Medical Association had conspired to destroy the profession.

And a dog thing. I mean... just imagine how he feels!

RIDDLE: Why do dogs lick their balls?

ANSWER: Because they can... that is, if they've still got 'em.

I think Bruce makes an excellent point... and I want to make clear that my negative statements, above, about chiropractors and their ability to pay, and/or their recklessness with x-rays, is not universal. There are decent and honorable chiropractors. Most of them, in fact, are, I'm sure, good people. And it's absolutely true that when Chiropractic really is appropriate to whatever's wrong; and when the chiropractor is particularly good at what s/he does, the results can be amazing. From my observations, I think it's also true that the AMA has done alot to try to discredit that profession... as it does many medical or pseudo-medical specializations that aren't part of the AMA status quo.

That said, the AMA is right about at least one thing it often complains about with regard to chiropractors: They (the chiropractors -- not all or even most of them, mind you... but alot of them) tend to overreach; and to try to fix things with "an alignment" that really should be referred to a physician. That's a well-known problem with chiropractors. The best ones are those who know their limitations and have good working relationships with regular physicians to whom they can refer patients who present with problems that might seem like they can or should be fixed through chiropractic, but really should be looked-at by a regular physician.

In fact, chiropractors who work as part of a physician practice are probably the best. In such cases, they usually have, at their beck and call, physicians, physical & occupational therapists, AMTA-certified massage therapists, etc. When you can find such an arrangement, that's were you'll find the best chiropractors. Some DO's offices are like that. Osteopaths are also (or at least were, for many years... and sometimes still are) the targets of AMA derision. Sometimes osteopaths feel like chiropractors are kindred spirits in that respect; and when both the osteopath and the chiropractor are both skilled and ethical, it can be a terrific combination, and a wonderful and effective place to get quality medical and chiropractic care.

    Lets be honest....

There are Chiropractors that limit their practice to what they do best which is treat back pain. I have had a bad case of arthritis in the spine for about ten years. The military doctor that first treated me pointed out many of the techniques he and the therapist used were actually developed in chiropratic.

However, there are chiropractors who move out into areas where they are untrained and use techniques which are psuedo science at best. 60 minutes ran an expose on some of them a few years back and in an undercover investigation they videoed a chiropractor who claimed to be a family physician. A woman took her small daughter in for the "flu" and the guy made the mother partially disrobe and lie down with the daughter on her chest so he could see how the mother daughter aura was affecting the child.

One can say this is an isolated event, but they also interviewed a husband and wife team of chiropractors who were making a fortune teaching just such things to chiroppractors to improve their billings. One thing they taught, "x-ray every time". Kind of like des elms pointed out. Here is a paper on some of their more dangerous practices: http://home.comcast.net/~bkrentzman/sup.vitamin.alt/alt.therapies/chiropractic.html#introduction
