I have completed my Masters in Business and have a Bachelors in CS. I did my Masters through the executive track and am looking to do the same for my PhD. or a DBA (Doctors in Business Admin). I am looking for accredited universities in the world that provide executive/online options for getting a PhD/DBA in either Business or IT/CS that are world famous. Any opinions/suggestions? Are there any rankings for the Doctorate levels? Are the institutions any others besides the usual, Capella, American University, Walden, etc.?

    Thanks for your help.

Methinks there's a university in Cleveland offering a short residency Executive Doctor of Management. Possibly Case Western Reserve University www.cwru.edu .

Checking the profiles of the executives in the Case Western EDM program might prove useful in determing fit.

Case Western's Executive Doctor of Managmeent is as famous as you'll find at the doctoral level, at least in the U.S. Check out their price too - it goes along with the image. I know one colleague that completed the program - she claims it really is top flight. It is clearly differentiated, however, from their traditional PhD.

Have you seen University of Maryland? They have a blended DM program.

There are always the very good Euro schools that offer DL doctorates. I've mentioned them in other threads: Aston (DBA or PhD), Henley (DBA), Manchester (DBA), Grenoble (DBA). All in either the UK or France. All require some residencies (some every year or twice a year, so it could get expensive in travel alone). On the positive side, each of these is AACSB accredited and all of them are good (or even world-class) universities.

You might also consider Nova Southeastern here in the U.S. Not AACSB, but at least a legit B&M school.

For the more technologically-inclined (as you are), you might consider Indiana State's PhD in Technology Management. It's not an AACSB business program PhD, but it sounds like it might be a great fit that would allow you to combine your expertise in business and CS.

You should get in touch with JoAnneP (sp?) on this forum, she has the inside track on the techie grad programs, CS and the like. If anyone would know about a treputable CS PhD from a good university that's offered via DL, it would be her.

This is the "University of Maryland University College", not the Univesity of Maryland. (Not AACSB)

If you are considering AACSB, CaseWestern is good, but requires a visit every 4 weeks.

Henley, Grenoble, Ashton are those that I found with very short residency, but a solid program.

    Han,

Help me out please. following are the eleven institutions in the University of Maryland system. Which do you mean is "The University of Maryland"?

    Coppin State University
    Frostburg State University
    Salisbury University
    Towson University
    University of Baltimore
    University of Maryland, Baltimore
    University of Maryland, Baltimore County
    University of Maryland, College Park
    University of Maryland Eastern Shore
    University of Maryland University College

    Fear the turtle!

Typically, when people refer to the "University of Maryland" without specification, they're referring to University of Maryland, College Park, which is the flagship institution (and home of the Terrapins).

I think there is a difference between naming insitutions that are in Maryland and Univerisities, and saying "Have you seen University of Maryland? They have a blended DM program.". Did you mean to say "Have you seen this University that happens to be in Maryland? They have a blended DM program." (referring to UMUC)

I think the statement was a bit misleading, and just wanted to clarify.

This is the reason I hate their name (saying nothing about the school, as I don't know anything about them). But I have said in previous threads, there is room for mis-communication (and I personally believe it is not a coincidence).

    Thanks

Thanks for all the information. I am looking at each one closely to see what could provide all the requirements I have in mind, one of which is the ever so important "prestige". Yes, unfortunately that does tend to be a requirement for me. I want to do my PhD or DBA from a well recognized University either by its high rankings or due to the fact that they are in the "League".

    Thanks again.

If you are looking for a fully DL PhD program in Computer Science from a prestigious university in the USA it is my opinion that you will find *nothing*. If you are looking for a minimal residence then the only player in town (well -- the USA at least) is Nova Southeastern University. On the other had, if you are willing to spend a couple of semesters in full residence then a few more opportunities open up. Most programs will publish their minimum residencies for their program. For instance, at the U. of Florida, you much complete 30 hours in residence, but as far as the other 60 hours you are free to take courses by DL. There are other schools that require even less on-campus residence (but more than NSU.)

If you are really motivated I think a good idea might be to look at the programs that are offering MSCS degrees by distance learning (see my web site linked in my signature) and then talk to each of them one-by-one to see if they could find someway to accomodate a DL PhD. My impression is that they are free to do this (if they want to) but a prestigious university often has no reason to work with you because they have plenty of applicants.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks

Thanks JoAnn. What about outside the US? I know Oxford had a DL PhD in Software Engineering. Unfortunately they discontinued the program just this year (just my luck). Any others you would know outside the US in the same category as this?

    Thanks.
