Hi, I continue to research a dl opportunity in Pastorship or Religion as an undergraduate field. I found that Judson College has a pretty liberal policy on accepting credits and accepts 30 from Seminary Extension. Anyone with first hand knowledge of this situation? Thanks. Hille

So... help me, here, Hille. I kinda' remember you mentioning this a time or two before, but I'm confused/unclear about precisely what you're trying to accomplish. If I understood it better, I might be able to help.

You are looking for something for yourself or someone else?

What's the goal? Simply, to become an pastor; or a lay or diaconal minister? A chaplain? If so, in what denomination, if any particular one? And in a parish or a specialized ministry or in missionary work or what?

Where is the person, thus far, on his/her road to this? Is the 30 credits from Seminary Extension all s/he has at the moment? Has an associates degree already been earned? If so, in what? Or is s/he pretty much beginning at the beginning on this?

How far does s/he want to go... AA/AS, BA/BS, MA, MDiv, MTh or ThM, DMin?

Is s/he wanting pastoral/theological training or just a religion/theological education?

Please begin at the beginning and help me (or us, if others want to chime in) understand precisely what you or s/he is trying to accomplish, and where you or s/he is along the way... if anywhere. And if you've already done that and I somehow either missed or just flat-out forgot that thread, then please provide a link thereto so I can get all caught-up.

Looking for direction for a friend

Hello and Good Morning, I am still working on a degree plan for my friend. His end goal is a pastorship but he attended a business tech school that is no more. He is a programmer but w/o testing credentials. He has 2 years of mission work. My guess is he could pass the CS testing and bounce to a graduate program at Philadelphia Bible College. Money is an issue. I hesitate to encourage him to use TESC because of the overwhelming enrollments. Thanks. Hille

well, I don't know anything about the program at Judson, but I do know about Seminary Extention -- I've taken courses there for Bible credits for my ACSI license.

They are ACE (you pay a bit extra). They are NOT difficult. The tests have to be proctored, but they were pretty straight forward. 30 hours from them seems very generous.

Indiana's school of continuing studies let's you transfer in 90 hours for a BGS and 45 hours for an AGS. For the AGS thats only 15 hours taken at Indiana and all of those can be done in a Self Acquired Compentency Portfolio. Courses can be taken online or by correspondence.

I've been keeping a loose eye on the SBC seminaries. Several have undergrad colleges now and I've been waiting to see if they'll do any more online. Most have some coursework online, but they are pretty slow to the idea of an entire degree. I mention them because if he's Baptist, he gets a break and many of the states have scholarships. I think they'll get to a completely online degree eventually.

Re: Looking for direction for a friend

I don't know why you won't answer my specific questions. Knowing the answers is important to those who may wish to make suggestions to you. You say "his end goal is a pastorship," but one doesn't just become a pastor in most denominations with just any ol' bible degree. The denomination matters... big time! And not all bible colleges are created equal.

You say he attended a business tech school that is no more, but that may not matter. When a school evaporates, its properly-awarded degrees do not. What tech school was it; and what was the certificate, diploma or degree he got therefrom? And is that all he's got?

And are you saying he's also got 30 hours from Seminary Extension? If so, which 30 hours? Hours are not hours are not hours. A degree isn't just whoever accumulates just any ol' 60 or 120 hours wins. Precisely what courses were taken matters greatly. He may have 30 Seminary Extension hours, but who knows how many of those will actually be transferable into anything else.

Please review the questions -- both in this post and in my previous one -- and please answer them, so that we're not operating blindly, here. Begin at the beginning. Cearly state what he now has; and where he'd like to end-up.

Again, if the questions already have been answered in another thread somewhere around here that I've somehow missed, then please point me to it.

And by "Philidelphia Bible College," do you mean Philadelphia Biblical University?

I'm pretty sure that the original question was aimed at anyone who knew about the particular institution.

Anyone with first hand knowledge of this situation? Thanks. Hille

Did it ever occur to you that maybe the original poster doesn't want the conversation to go the way that you want to steer it?

You seem so demanding at times.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that.

Naw. I agree Gregg is demanding of others. People like him who demand much of themselves often are that way. But I like ya anyway Gregg!:)

Did it ever occur to you that there may be offline communications about which you know nothing, and which suggest that, in fact, the original poster does; and that between said poster's failure to provide what is needed to answer the question(s) asked both therein and here, I might have a justified (or at least understandable) frustration with the process... especially considering the fact that I'd really like to help get the thread starter to where said thread-starter would obviously like to go but equally obviously doesn't know which questions to ask (much less what the answers to them are) to get there?

And you see that as a character flaw, do you? I have a gameplan that I'd like to share with the thread-starter but, unlike many who use the shotgun approach to helping around here, I thought I'd do the responsible thing and, oh, I dunno, bother to make sure it was appropriate first. Pardon me, Mr. Makes-wanting-to-help-more-trouble-than-it's-worth.

I'm sure you aren't, but in another thread here I tell a story about the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1968 and the opinion that 30,000 people shared about that which should give you a clue as to how much I care whether you're alone in that assessment.

    In spite of myself! ;)

Now, Gregg, those offline communications DEFEAT THE VERY PURPOSE OF THIS BOARD!!!

Easy on the up-the-nose shoving, there, big fella' (though you are right). I didn't initiate said private communication, nor respond. I brought it right back here, where it belongs. So I did my part.

    Nice try, though. ;)
