Nice article and makes one more confident that online degrees are here to stay and our investment is worth it...

A snippet of from the article says:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Many nonprofit schools are expanding online, too, to reach more students. Among them are the University of Florida, the University of Central Florida and Nova Southeastern University in Davie. Nova Southeastern said almost 5,100 students, or 20 percent, of the 25,430 enrolled last year took at least one class online. It didn't have a figure for how many students were taking classes exclusively online.”
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bottom line: Although some degreeinfo.com participants might not perceive Nova Southeastern University as a respectable university, Nova’s reputation in South Florida is pretty fine at present. Davie/Fort Lauderdale, which hosts Nova Southeastern University’s main campus, is less than 20 miles from Miami.

Has this been expressed in any real sense? I don't get that impression, and I (for one) don't share it. NSU seems to have a fine reputation here.

Good article. This makes me feel more confident about the future usability of my online education.

Nova Southeastern's lack of respect by many is, in my opinion, largely unwarranted and is due, at least in part, to the fact that Nova was a pioneer in distributed education (including multiple off-campus centers, student cohorts, short-term on-campus residencies and courses delivered primarily at a distance) before other institutions started doing these now-common things. I have never attended NSU, but know many school administrators and teachers who received Nova graduate degrees because there was no doctoral program within a resonable distance.

When colleagues at my state university would speak derogatively about NSU, I would inform them that Nova produces more minority doctorates than any university in the country and also has a medical school (we are a very racially diverse university without a medical school). My colleagues usually respond with "Gee, I had no idea. What I have heard about Nova must be wrong." Incidentally, one of our professors is a NSU grad (we also have three Union Institute grads among our faculty and administration).

I agree, although the way I would put it is that both on the board and in South Florida it's seen as perfectly respectable but not especially prestigious.

Here at Keiser College we hire a lot of newly minted PhDs and DBAs as adjuncts for our Business and MIS departments. One of them, a DBA, recently was hired full time, then promoted to be Program Director. As I recall, the fellow he replaced also was a Nova DBA. Both are knowledgeable people you'd want on your teaching faculty. We have at least one Nova PsyD for a Psychology instructor as well, and probably other Nova people of which I'm unaware.

I also understand that Nova graduates a disproportionate number of minority doctoral students. I forget the statistic, but it was impressive.

Based on 2003 data, Nova was tied with UT Austin for the second highest number of doctorates granted (behind #1 U.C. Berkeley). Of the 675 doctoral degrees awarded by NSU. Over 80% of NSU doctorates are awarded to minority students:

--423 were awarded to Black students (#1 of all U.S. universities).
--120 were awarded to Hispanic students (#7 of all U.S. universities).
--21 were awarded to American Indian (Native American) students (#2 of all U.S. universities).

These statistics are even more impressive when one realizes that 1 of every 3 doctorates awarded to Black students, 1 of every 4 awarded to native American students and 1 of every 11 awarded to Hispanic students comes from NSU.

Yes but not by you. A few posters have and they are absolutely entitled to their opinion.
