    Hi,

I have been searching for cheap (below 14k Tuition) RA "Regional Accredation" schools offering MBA Online programs in Finance. Most of them have eitheir 1 or 2 finance classes, and claim to have MBA with finance concenteration...Which kind of seems useless...

Within this budget, the only good Finance program I found is offered thru "Bellevue University". If you know of any, please do post.

Please post similar information on MBA in accounting program too.

    Thanks,

    SS

DL MASTER'S PROGRAMS IN FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING

Well, I have composed a list of accredited master's degrees in finance & accounting from the subject index of Bears' Guide. I leave it to the reader to click on the weblinks to determine: which offer finance or accounting or both; which are accredited nationally, regionally, or professionally; whether they fit a given price range; whether they can be finished in a given time-frame, etc.

I'm currently in the Bellevue University MBA (Finance Concentration) Program and really like the school. The workload is tough but I'm learning a ton. The only thing I really dislike are the proctored tests. I'm a distance learning student because my job does not allow me to be away for long periods during the day and in the Bellevue Program I had to take 3 proctored tests last term two of which were 4 hours each.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Baker College(yes it is in Ted's list)
    http://www.baker.edu/
has an accounting and finance concentrations and is within your budget. Also I do believe Baker does not require proctored exams. As far as Bellevue University, I have heard before and Ray has seemed to confirm that they do have procotred exams that take alot of time away.

Cal State Dominguez Hills has a finance concentration(no accounting) and costs about $9000(300/credit *30 credits)
    http://mbaonline.csudh.edu/programs.asp

    Morehead State University http://www.morehead-st.edu/colleges/business/mba/index.html
Does not have any " concentrations" but does allow a student to take 12 electives credits. They are AACSB accredited. They are a bit over budget though at a little over $16,000.

Jonnies website is a great place to start looking check here:

Also check out the US News website here:
    http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/elearning/tables/mba_reg_prof.htm

good luck and let us know how you make out!

    Hi Ray,

Thanks a lot for yr reply.....Few questions for Bellevue University

    1. Is it Blackboard based. Are the discussions in it pretty motivating, or dead talk. Are students encouraged to discuss topics often...Or is the program just text book based.

    2. In what way is the workload tough. Are there weekly assignments, quizzes or just simple compulsory posting on blackboards.

    3. Are the instructirs well knowledgable. I see, U have a BS in finance too. So, are its Masters Courses better then BS. I mean courses which add more value to yr BS degree.

    4. Is getting A grade easy...or would u rate is tough. How many hours should a full time working person commit in a week. My background is in software devl/IT (past 15 years)...so am fairly new to finance topics.

Looking forward to yr reply...and thanks for posting the list of schools...although many seem to be outside USA.

Re: Re: Re: Advice Needed - DL Programs in MBA in Finance

    Hello sanjovi,

Yes, Bellevue is blackboard based. The discussions are pushed much more here then the school I attended for my undergrad degree and your grade will suffer if you do not participate regularly with meaningful dialogue.

The workload is tough because of the volume as well as the level you need to understand the material. A typical week’s work is as follows:

Read 1-3 chapters in the text book
Answer assigned homework questions from the textbook for each chapter (around 10-20 questions per chapter) and discuss your answers in the discussion forums.
Participate in a group case assignment where you each contribute a portion of the work that is submitted at the end of the week.
Complete a quiz or test on that weeks reading.

Along with the weekly work there were two individual projects required and 2 proctored tests in each class.

I took two classes last term and spent about 20-30 hours a week combined for both classes.

The instructors are extremely knowledgeable in the classes I've taken so far. I've been very impressed at the amount of detail they go into when answering student’s questions. Sometimes you get way more information then you wanted.

I wouldn't know how easy it is to get an A since I've not received one yet. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my BSBA but I've only been able to muster B's at Bellevue. I'll let you know how easy it is when I finally get one.

As far as having my BS in finance...I'm learning a ton at Bellevue that I probably should have learned in my undergrad studies. The format for my undergrad degree (writing research papers about internet articles) didn't expose me to enough of the finance field. The Bellevue University system is forcing me to learn more.

I am really happy with Bellevue but I will warn you that you’ll have to work hard to keep up with the pace. Each term is a busy 12 weeks.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks Ray

    Ray,

I appreciate yr response...If u get to know any other schools which have good programs let me know...Although I have put my application for BU program...I will wait and see if they would accept me..I find no reason why they should dent....but...will keep fingers crossed..

Does school like Baker Online and Upper Iowa and North Alabama too have the same vigorous environment...or is it just BU. I hope more people answer....although I do keep reading any post I find....

Ball State is excellnt too....But I have not come across any reviews how is their internet delivery for DL MBA programs. Their remote Satellite is fine.,..but need advice on internet based delivery..

Anyone know's how good/tough is Brenau Universities MBA accounting program....I have read people praising it...but need some detail information.

    Thanks.

Sanjovi: take a look at Regis University. http://www.mbaregis.com/degrees_mbafa_curriculum.asp

The course work is challenging, the instructors responsive, and the classes are small. Tuition is above your range but might be worth a look.

I am nearing the halfway mark on a general MBA there and enjoying the experience.

I am currently attending Brenau, but for the plain vanilla MBA, not the Accounting one. Brenau classes basically follow the model above for Bellevue, and they're also on Blackboard, except there aren't any proctored tests.... the midterms and finals are of the "take-home" type. The classes I have taken there have been mixed so far... a couple really strong ones and ones that were not so great. In all classes discussion is consistently a big part of the grade. I have yet to take my required accounting class, Managerial Accounting. My accounting prerequisite class was taught by an instructor who was fairly difficult and, amazingly, managed to impart the basics of accounting in about 5 weeks. His name is George Wentworth and I definitely recommend him.

Brenau is not incredibly expensive, but it's definitely more expensive than Bellevue.

Interesting comments on Brenau...I live about an hour and a half from Gainesville and have considered the Brenau program.

    Hi Ted,

Is there a ranking of these schools, or are they just listed as recommended schools in Bears Guide...What do the numbers at the end mean..Index pages , does BG15 mean A&Finance. If u could offer them in a ranked format, that will be appreciable....

I just realised what bears guide was...I hope they offered an ebook format. Thanks

Not sure of the rankings of the schools; they're simply listed in alphabetical order. Something like, "Baker College (BG15, 99)" means you would find Baker College on page 99 of the 15th edition of Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning. Not sure whether it is offered in ebook format.

    Hello Ray,

How are the proctored exams handled? Do you select a proctor at work, have this person complete a form and send it to BU, or is it some other arrangement? What type of tests are they, essay, multiple choice, short answer?

I'm currently at Capella in the Organization & Management program, but have decided to complete a certificate (in a few weeks) and am looking to enroll into an MBA program.

Thanks in advance for your response.

    Hello Bruce,

You just go to a web page at BU and fill out the proctor nomination form. Once it's approved they email the exam to the proctor. Here are the proctor requirements for BU...

    Proctor Instructions

The tests consist of every type of question. Very little multiple choice. I've taken business statistics and accounting classes so far and the majority of questions I had to solve quantitative problems or accounting scenarios.

I've very happy with the Bellevue Program.

Perhaps in the future Ray. I'm only taking one of the foundation courses, MBA 505, this session. It will overlap with my last Capella course.

Kudos to you for taking two courses at a time, it is a daunting task especially by DL. Although many question DL degrees I've had several people at work state how difficult it is to maintain the discipline required to take DL courses. I've gotten a person that is in my group to do his BS via DL at TESC. He's amazed at how difficult it is. He prefers to attend B&M classes based on the built in discipline, being told when to attend class.
