The Best advice is to always contact one's Education Service Officer or Navy College Education Specialist.

The DANTES website has a wealth of information.

Tuition Assistance is a great benefit. It’s not free because the service member is utilizing a well earned benefit.

A few schools, I don't think it's possible to list all of the opportunities:

    My alma mater: AMU/APUS
    http://www.amu.apus.edu/TuitionandFees/DoD_Tuition_Assistance.htm

The Book Grant for undergraduate students is a significant extra at APUS.

Another school I hold dear: Liberty University also has a book voucher for undergraduate students.

And the “Big Three” have military programs:

    Excelsior College

    Thomas Edison State College

    Charter Oak State College

Many state schools are giants in military off-duty education as well as distance learning in general:

    Old Dominion University

    http://www.dl.odu.edu/partnerships/index.html

    University of Maryland University College

The opportunities for military students are almost endless. I can’t emphasize enough that the military student should always consult with his or her Education Service Officer or Navy College Education Specialist before investing time and money in any educational endeavor.

    Military Correspondence Courses

One of the best things I have found is the free correspondence courses that members of the military can take from the military institutes. These courses can be turned into college credit at almost any college due to the fact that quite a few have been evaluated by the American Council on Education.

    ACE Military Guide
    http://www.militaryguides.acenet.edu/

These three institutes offer hundreds of courses, that can be turned into hundreds of college credits.

    Marine Corps Institute
    Air Force Institute
    Coast Guard Institute
    .

"service men and women will be able to earn up to 28 semester credits per fiscal year toward a Bachelor or Master's degree at Touro University International (TUI) AT NO COST TO THEM"

Touro University sounds pretty good for military personnel.
