So I'm really taking the fast track to getting my degree done with the TESC BSBA degree program.

But I'm in a major bind. I am on track to finish up 117 credits towards my degree by the end of September. The TESC program has a 3 credit requirement for Business Communications or Managerial Communications. I spoke to an advisor there and I was told that there is no DANTES/CLEP/TECEP that satisfies this requirement, leaving me with three choices; take a DL or guided study course, develop a portfolio, or transfer the credit in from another RA school.

At first thought it seemed that the portfolio would be the most desirable and quickest option. But then I found out it takes 16 weeks (even if you have completed your portfolio extremely early) for the passing credit to be granted. That is much too long for me to wait. Pretty much the same goes for doing the coursework.

So I'm left with one real option, finding an RA school that will let me challenge these three credits given my business background. Obviously I know I will have to pay substantially more for these credits if I find a school that would allow me to do something like this.

I did some googling online (not the best method given my circumstance) and came up with a DETC school California Coast University and they have a challenge program. I'm not sure if TESC would accept a transfer credit from a DETC school. Does anyone happen to know the answer?

If not, are there any other schools with challenge examinations that anyone knows of that are RA?

    Thanks for your help.

    Cheers!

    Great suggestions!

I looked at both of them and my plan is to sign up for the Challenge Exam first, if I pass, then I'll transfer that credit.

If not, then I'll take the LSU course which can be completed in 5 weeks from start to finish.

And they're both very reasonably priced!

    Thanks!

I hate to keep sounding like a shill for Thomson Education Direct, but I am currently studying one of their business programs. I believe they have a business communications course. It is self-paced, and very reasonably priced. While ED is DETC-accredited, the courses are evaluated by ACE, which means it would be accepted in transfer to TESC. ED doesn't go out of its way to advertise that it does have individual courses, but I know it is possible to take just one course with them.

    TCord1964-

That was my original plan. But after 3 phone calls to ED they are unable to find the Business Communications course that they list in their catalog. In fact one representative contacted an instructor who then told her that the course is no longer available.

If you know of a contact at ED that has access to this course I will gladly purchase it and take it.

    Thanks for the help!

Hmmm...I double-checked my degree plan, and it appears you are right, it is no longer being offered. Sorry about that.

As far as challenging a course at a DETC-accredited school, be aware that TESC does not accept DETC credits, unless it is an ACE-evaluated course or the school itself is a candidate for regional accreditation.

A Google search revealed a number of community colleges which offer the course, but that would not give you the option of speed you say you desire. I think Athabasca in Canada allows you to challenge their courses, but they are not inexpensive and you would be dealing with (I presume) a foreign school.

I wish I could be of more help.

Challenge for credit at Athabasca is a lot cheaper than one thinks (certainly a lot cheaper than their courses). $285 CAN is a pretty reasonable test-out price.

More inportantly, although Athabasaca is a Canadian school, they're now accredited by Middle States, just the same as TESC. http://www.athabascau.ca/media/index.php?id=82

Is that per credit, or for the whole course? If that is the total cost to challenge the whole course, that's roughly $212 US. Certainly cheaper than many courses, and since Athabasca is now accredited by Middles States ( I wasn't aware of that), that may be the perfect option for this situation.

    Thanks for the info agilham!

    Hi,
Education Direct has a 3 credits Business Communications course.
It's 185$ and from what I hear their courses are fairly easy.
75% of the grade are from open book quizzes and the proctor final counts for 25%. Their courses are self paced.
It's ACE approved and accepted by excelsior or TESC.
You have to register through the:
    Business and Industrial division 1-800-233-0259
One last thing I challenged a course at Athabasca U I really knew the material and it still required a lot of work.

    Whole course. See http://www.athabascau.ca/calendar/page05_05.html

Athabasca's courses remain a bit, um, not so cheap.

    Pas de problem.

I admit that I was a bit surprised when I saw the notice on the site about Middle States. I assume it's very recent.
