more than introductory distance courses in the subject?

Hi, nice to see someone interested in the same field I am in.

I know of no online courses in Economic Geography specifically. The next closest thing I would say however, is Penn State's Online Certificate in Community and Economic Development. I think they cover a lot of the same concepts in the program.

Otherwise, I would say try searching for schools in the UK. Economic Geography seems to be a more popular subject over there.

Or you might try the bachelor's in human geography at Open University www.open.ac.uk .

You might want to look at Maquarie University in Australia. They have a graduate program in Human Geography. I know that at least 50% of their program is online. I do not know if it is completely online. Although not exactly the same, you can look to see if they can accommodate your interests.

Also, the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance which is made up of: Colorado State University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Texas Tech University, Michigan State University, Montana State University, University of Nebraska, North Dakota State University, Oklahoma State University, South Dakota State University, is now offering a masters degree in community development. It is scheduled to begin this fall (August 22nd). You might want to look at this also since they do have an economic development track.

From what I understand people in the US can't take courses from the UK Open University. Has this changed?

Apart from a small number of business and computing courses, no.

Why would Open U have such a policy?

Well, the original US venture in 2000 - 2001 wasn't exactly a barrel of laughs, so I can see why they're no longer keen on the US market.

Also, the way the OU runs its courses has two major drawbacks in the US market. First, the OU provides a urlot of tutorial support. Second, the courses are mainly what the OU call 30 and 60 credit courses. As an OU degree requires 360 credits of courses, we're talking about a course that represents a large fraction of a degree. In the UK we've no problem about courses that represent that much of a degree, but getting them translated to US credit hours would be a real pain. Just imagine what one of those credit evaluators who think that a Heriot Watt course isn't equivalent to a US MBA course would say when faced with a course that's the equivalent of 10 or 20 upper level credits!
