Enrolled in Excelsior College!

    Hello gang,

Well...after a year of waffling back and forth, spending nearly a grand on enrollment fees, and sending four educational transcripts to one new school, I am now an Excelsior College student. According to "EC", I have only 22 semester/33 quarter hour credits to complete (of which 24 quarter credits are lower lever).

I am still attending Portland State University (a quarter based school) to complete the credits, and transferring the work to EC for semester value credit - talk about fun with math! My upper division major course credits will double count for my lower level area too, cutting my work down a bit - thereby removing 8 quarter credits from the 24 lower level needed (by using 8 upper level credits of two Philosophy courses)....nice. Ya'll getting this...write it down...LOL! In any event, after very careful calculations and numerous phone calls (I almost know everyone on staff at EC by this point), I should be done with all my work for the Bachelor of Science in Philosophy by March of 2006 (attending Fall and Winter Quarters)...and going to EC's commencement in July in Albany, N.Y. This is of course after they verify my record which they should have more than enough time to complete before that happens.

You gotta know that after nearly 15 years from when I first started at 19, (or 6 1/2 years of true, hard recent work...take your pick), I am going to party so much when I am done, that the state or Oregon will need to declare Martial Law against me...LOL!

Just thought you'd all want to know...as I have posted here in the past.

Congratulations on your choice…I swear making up your mind on which university to go with has to be the hardest part!

Congratulations. The decision to decide is as important as which choice.

Stay on 'em, though. I tell my students everywhere that it is their education, not the school's, and they should manage it. But this is no more true than at an assessment school, where meeting the degree requirements involves many sources of credit (and, therefore, many individual decisions).

    Get 'er done!

    Re: GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!!!!

Thank you...I will keep you all posted. Although I have been going to college since 1999 straight through, I'm just trying to avoid some undesired requirements from Portland State University by using Exceslior - which by default cuts out a few courses that PSU would have required.

    Well...off I go Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho.

    CONGRATS

    Hi Philo!

It's been a while since I got back to browsing the site, so to my surprise when I came across your post about enrolling. Congrats on deciding to go full steam ahead with EC! (I'm a little late with the well wishes, but hey, better later than never!!)

Good luck to you and make yourself proud by earning that beautiful piece of paper!! An dbythe way, that Info Lit course is a breeze!

    Re: CONGRATS

    Hello,

Thanks for the well wishes. The EC Lit course starts on Sept. 1st, and my classes through my local university begin on Sept. 24th. So, early end to summer...kinda. I don't expect it will take me more than a week to finish the "one hit wonder" as we call them out here.

Just really looking forward to being done...this is a long chapter in my life. March 2006...that is the month and year target date of my degree completion - Bachelor of schience: Philosophy.

    Then, of course...there's graduate school....

    PhiloScholar,
    I just posted...
The Info Lit course is doable in 4 hours. I finished in less than that. The quizzes are very basic and "open book" as is the final. I wouldn't be concerned about the course itself other than the cost. Hope this helps.
I wholeheartedly agree with Gunsmoke, the choice of a college can be one of the toughest things you will have to do. I have been enrolled with Excelsior for 11 months now and have received nothing short of excellent student service.
    Good luck with your decision.

    Hey John,

Yeah, I signed up for "INL 102" today. $250 bucks...man, that hurt. Squeezed it from my head and loose pocket change in my couch...LOL!

I've heard from EC students that this course is a breeze, but the staff at EC would have you think otherwise. I think they're having to justify giving you a degree by requiring this course, when most of one's work is done elsewhere outside of EC. "Oh, have them take a class with us, to show they spent some real academic time here....". It probably is a cake-walk of a course in reality.

I can think of better ways to justify the spending of $250 bucks than on a 1-credit class that is nothing more than an administration pocket padder! Thats worth two college courses at my local university!

    Its almost over...(March 2006)...if I don't go insane first.

    Thanks for the feedback John.
