I just completed COP5536 Advanced Data Structures at the University of Florida which had both on-campus and distance learning students. Both sets of students had identical assignments and exams and I thought it was interesting to compare the grades between the two groups:

(NOTE: I did not include incompletes or Fs since the F grades where not actually posted and I have no way of knowing the eventually grade for an incomplete at this point. But just so that you know, the DL group had no F's and 1 incomplete. Looking at the one I grade, this student should end up with a B or better if they successfully complete the course and their grade is consistent with their previous grades. The on-campus students currently has 3 F's or I's.)

    DISTANCE LEARNING STUDENTS

    A (6/11) 54.5%
    B+ (3/11) 27.3%
    C+ (1/11) 9.1%
    C (1/11) 9.1%

    ON CAMPUS STUDENTS

    A (8/19) 42.1%
    B+ (1/19) 5.3%
    B (4/19) 21.1%
    C+ (4/19) 21.1%
    D (2/19) 10.5%

DL students making B+ or better: 81.8%
    On-campus students making B+ or better: 47.4%

I'm guessing the difference is due both to motivation and experience. But that is just an out-and-out guess. Of course me being 45 years young, it could also be that we old foggies are "much more capable on average of learning complex material at a far faster rate" than our younger counterparts. ;-)

    DL students are better looking.

Are the University of Florida profs the same for the B&M and DL classes?

Rephrased: DL students are better when they're looking than when they're not looking. They are better looking.

    Sounds like a good comparison.

Wonder if anyone has a grade comparison between older and younger students. Between night and day students.

BTW - At age 60 I am at times foggy but am referred to as fogey.
    :)

I guess I butchered the spelling of that word.... (what's new?) Thanks for being so polite!
