Transfer From Education Direct?

I have a couple of years to ponder this question, but I thought some of the members here would have some suggestions I have not considered. I am currently enrolled in Education Direct's ASB in Business Management/Marketing. They are DETC-accredited and the program's courses are evaluated by ACE. When I graduate, I would like to transfer into another program for a Bachelor of Science in Marketing or Marketing Management. Some of the options I am considering so far include Excelsior, COSC and TESC, Kaplan University and Bellevue University.

Does anyone know of a RA, preferably a state college or university, which offers a BS in Marketing by DL? When I do a Google search, I am directed to the usual, strictly DL schools such as Western Governors University. The reason I am looking into a state university or college is I am looking for a "name" that employers have heard of and respect. I also plan to eventually get my MBA or MS in Integrated Marketing Communications.

    Suggestions?

I think Drexel University has your number..

They offer a BS in Marketing by DL. This program may be completed 100% online. I was seriously considering this program, but decided that I wasn't all that interested in Marketing!

Drexel University is a very prestigious University (primarily known as a campus-based school), located in Philadelphia, PA. The tuition is NOT cheap ($500/credit), however see my P.S. below.

Here is a link to the Drexel BS Marketing page:

    http://www.drexel.com/Fields_of_Study/business/gen-studies-marketing/index.shtml

    Good luck!

P.S. If your employer offers conditional tuition reimbursement (meaning that they will only pay if you make a certain grade), Drexel offers a Tuition Deferment program. You can defer tuition until after the course ends and you receive you grades.

The following page describes this process:

I do not get tuition assistance through my employer, and this year I did not qualify for federal financial aid, so cost will be a factor for me. I'm afraid Drexel is WAY too expensive for me. Cost is the reason I am attending Eduation Direct year. If anyone knows of a decent marketing program at a moderately-priced state university, I would be interested.

Yes, sir - Drexel is VERY expensive. I can totally understand where your coming from a budget perspective. I am also strapped for cash (I have one son and another child on the way in October). I had to limit my search to schools that offered tuition deferment plans. Fortunately, I found a school (Nova Southeastern) that offered a BS in Psych (which is what I was looking for) and has a deferement program (45 days after the semester ends).

Anyway, I was also looking at another school - Franklin University. I actually went so far as to apply and enroll in this school, but at the last minute found NSU. They do offer a BS in Marketing 100% online. The tuition at Franklin Univ is half the price of Drexel ($244/credit) and they're semester hour based (Drexel is quarter hour based). Big difference! Still not cheap, but it may be doable. Franklin is not exactly as prestigious as Drexel, but they're an RA school and they have a campus based program as well in Ohio.

You may view the Franklin Univ home page here:

    http://www.franklin.edu

You can check out the online BS Marketing program here:

    http://www.franklin.edu/en_us/www.franklin.edu/Degree%2BPrograms/Undergraduate%2BMajors/Marketing/

Finally, you will not find a better customer service rep then Jessica at Franklin Univ. She is the online "Student Services Rep" at Franklin. If you have any questions about the program, I would suggest that you contact her. Jessica's e-mail is: [email protected].

    Good luck!

Franklin looks pretty good, PLUS they offer a program which gives you a BS in Marketing/MS in Communications when you're done...very cool! I am confused about one thing. On one hand, Franklin states they give credit for ACE-evaluated training, but they also say they do not give transfer credit for degrees which are not regionally accredited. ED is basically both: ACE evaluated but nationally-accredited. I wonder if it would qualify for transfer based on ACE evaluation despite being DETC accredited?

    $400 per credit...ouch!

I'm looking for something around the $200-ish per credit range (or less, if that's possible).

Yes, I was also intrigued by their combined BS/MS programs. I do know that they offer three trimesters per year, with varying course lengths (anywhere from 3 to 16 weeks).

I'm not sure about the ACE training question, but give them a call. I'm sure they can clarify this policy for you.

Franklin joined the CHEA HETA Transfer Alliance, so they must be willing to accept NA credits now. Maybe they just haven't updated their website.

See http://www.chea.org/heta/default.asp and search Franklin University.

Franklin has possibilities, and I do like that combined BS/MS program. I'll check with them on transfer issues.

Thanks for the links, Angela. I already knew about UIU, and that is on my short list. I know for a fact they will take a degree in transfer from an NA school. Liberty will, too...I'm just not sure I want to go to the "Jerry Falwell" school. Lakeland College is an obnoxious $505 per credit hour, for a school considered a step above a vocational school in Wisconsin. Regis looks good, but is too expensive at $365 per credit hour for online classes.

So far, the list of possibilities looks like this:

    1. Franklin University

    2. Upper Iowa University

    3. Charter Oak or Thomas Edison State College

Why didn't I think of this earlier? My alma mater Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN has an online BS in marketing nowadays. You'd have to check on transfer, but when I attended in the 80's they were very liberal in what they'd accept. They're at $205 per credit. Their business dept is pretty good.

My short list now looks like this:

    1. Franklin University

    2. Upper Iowa University

    3. Charter Oak State College

    4. Bellevue University

    5. Kaplan University

That list is in no particular order. I know that choices 2-5 will accept my ED associate degree in transfer. Still have to check on Franklin and Metropolitan State in St. Paul, MN. I believe Charter Oak has a business degree, but I don't know if that includes a concentration in Marketing or not, so TESC might actually pop back onto the list.

I guess what I'm really looking for is a STATE university with a name like "________ State University" or "_______ State College". I know TESC and COSC are two such colleges, but you know what I mean...something which also has a "traditional" B&M presence. I'd also be open to schools with "business communications" or "corporate communications" majors or concentrations available at a distance.

After doing some more investigation, I realized COSC offers a business degree, but no marketing degree. I have replaced it on my list with TESC. I've also dropped Kaplan University from the list. At $280 per credit hour, it is more than I want to spend.

My short list now looks like this:

    1. Franklin University

    2. Upper Iowa University

    3. Thomas Edison State College

    4. Bellevue University

I've been doing some more research on this. I am (for now) scratching Bellevue off the list because it is outside of my price range of around $200 per credit hour. I thought I remembered reading Bellevue was about $220, but last night I checked out their website and discovered it's actually $280 per credit hour, a bit too high for me.

I have also emailed Metropolitan State University to see if an ED is acceptable to them. The require an RA degree in transfer, but they do accept ACE-evaluated courses, but I want to double-check.

The revised list of possilbe schools to transfer to for a BS in Marketing include ( in no particular order ):

    1. Franklin University
    2. Upper Iowa University
    3. TESC
    4. Metropolitan State University (?)

If anyone else has any other AFFORDABLE suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

I have to scratch a couple of more schools off my short list. It doesn't look like Franklin or Metropolitan State will consider non-RA work, and they don't appear to be very accomodating to ACE-evaluated courses done outside of an RA environment. The admissions department at Metropolitan State did not reply to any of my emails, either. I had to find the information on my own. Very disappointing.

For now, it looks like my choices are either TESC or Upper Iowa University, and at this point I'm leaning toward TESC.

I have another school to add to my list for a potential BA in Markeing. It is Peru State College, in Nebraska. I like the fact it is a state college, the price is very inexpensive ($114 per credit hour!) and it is RA. Now, I just need to find out if they will accept ED's courses for transfer credit.

Does anyone here have any experience with Peru, particularly the distance learning programs? Thoughts? Opinions?
