USNY, Regents, Excelsior

I noticed a lot of graduates from The University of the State of New York (USNY), Regents College and Excelsior College. Correct me if I am wrong but are these all the same institution with name changes throughout the years?

When I go to the CHEA database for a search of accredited institutions, only Excelsior College is shown in the database.

Can anyone find the previous two schools mentioned anywhere under accreditation?

If not, would it be prudent when listing your school on a resume to explain that USNY and Regents are now Excelsior College?

The University of the State of New York name still stands and has since 1784. They are the overall controlling authority for all colleges and universities, public and private, in New York State. Their degrees by assessment program was once known as Regents College, but it is now known as Excelsior College. Yes it is acceptable to write on one's resume:

"BA, Regents College of the University of the State of New York (now Excelsior College)"

Actually Ted, you are mostly correct. Since 1784, the Regents have had the authority to charter, visit, and inspect institutions of higher learning. However, the University of the State of New York name was created from a general law of 1853 which standardized Regents chartering of academies, colleges, and universities. From the 1860s on, the Regents held annual convocations of representatives from institutions making up the University of the State of New York. The time the name really became "firm."

Not a big deal - but just a lil' more of the history.

    Where accredited?

Is the University of the State of New York accredited?
I cannot find them listed in

    NY

The University of the State of New York appears to be a state education department run by state government.

In essence it appears to be an accreditation body in and of itself!

My diploma from them says just...."The University of the State of New York". In the verbage it goes onto say, "The Board of Regents of The University of the State of New York upon the recommendation of the faculty...."

    Interesting!

My High School Diploma says, "high school name, approved by the University of the State of New York."
Although I don't go around saying I got my high school diploma from the University of the State of New York.

On the other hand, I can go around saying that my diploma is from the USNY...because it is. The diploma doesn't say it is approved by USNY, though.

    Ok.

Suppose you put USNY on an application for admission to graduate school or on a resume and the school or future employer looks it up. Does he find that USNY is regionally accredited or state approved, or both?

Like I said, I can't find reference to The University of the State of New York only to Excelsior College! Excelsior College shows up as a regionally accredited school but USNY does not!

I like Ted's wording, "BA, Regents College, member of the University of the State of New York (now Excelsior college)."

I realize that your diploma states something different but writing USNY on a resume or college application may cause confusion about regional accreditation especially if the transcript says Excelsior College!

Right. I didn't graduate from Excelsior, nor Regents College. I graduated from The University of the State of New York. The program was called the Regents External Degree Program, but that phrase doesn't appear anywhere on my diplomas.

The name of the school--while it was still being run by USNY--was changed to Regents College Degree Program. When it was privatized it was changed to Regents College, with the understanding that the school would change the name again. "Excelsior" was the selection.

    Re: Ok.

In another old thread on whether states should be allowed to become accreditors, it was noted that NY State is the only one of the fifty states that is an accreditor. The state does their accrediting through USNY.

The University of the State of New York is simply the legal name of the New York State Education Department. Outside of the SUNY system, all colleges and universities in the state of New York are considered to be part of USNY.

It is an accreditation agency in its own right. It would not currently be listed on a list of accredited schools becuase it no longer awards degrees in its own name. It was definately accredited by Middle States for the period of time that it awarded degrees.

USNY is also the licensing authority for all of the professions in New York State, except for law and the ministry. Years ago, in an interview, I had someone question the validity of my degree. I was able to stop that cold by pointing to the interviewer's CPA certificate hanging on the wall - It was from - you guessed it - The University of the State of New York. Licenses to practice medicine, architecture, engineering, nursing, etc. are all issued by USNY in New York State.

I list my USNY degree on my resume as the University of the State of New York. No mention of Regents or Excelsior.

My BS diploma (issued in 1992) is from USNY.

My transcript for this degree is headed Regents College (perhaps if I requested one today it would come from Excelsior).

This degree was (and still is under Excelsior) is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

I list Excelsior most time on resumes.

It is not uncommon for schools to change names through the years both here (USA) and in the UK.
