Hi people- thanks in advance for all your input ... Can people share knowledge about SCUPS' doctoral psych programs? Their tuition fees are significantly less than other programs... In addition, what about NCU's programs? I know they are accredited, which is a major plus- I was told they are beginning a PhD program in Marriage and Family Therapy- anyone know anything about this? How about other online-based doctoral MFT programs? Does another similar one exist? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
huh? Well, actually, accreditation is not just a "major plus" it is truly the first and most important thing to consider when dealing with a licensing sensitive area like psych. I mean, that's like saying "Hey, I like these two parachutes and that one doesn't have big rips in it, so that's a big plus". An MFT is a very useful degree and one can usually practice without a doctorate in most states. Check out Capella's counseling program.
Here are three ways to cut costs: MA in Psychology: www.scups.edu MS in Psychology: http://www.calcoast.edu/programs_mspsych.php MSCE in Counseling/Psychology: http://www.columbiasouthern.edu/uwa/programs/mscepsyc.html These programs are in the $570-$840 per course range. When you complete your masters degree, 10 courses may transfer to Northcentral University for admissions to the doctoral program in Psychology. Ray
Joddok is correct that you can practice with a master's in marriage and family therapy. As to accreditation, I was recently researching PsyD programs and it appears that there is a school in California, SDIU, that has a PsyD, which, though unaccredited, does allow one to sit for the state licensure exams. That said, if one ever wishes to practice outside the state of California, one might check whether the new state will still require an accredited degree or whether they will allow you to sit for their state licensure exam if you have already passed your state licensure exam in another state. As to degree programs, I have already posted a list of doctoral programs in psychology and counseling at http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19769 and a list of master's programs in psychology and counseling at http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20247 . Perhaps one of those has an MFT concentration. The psych doc thread also has a list of old psychology threads at degreeinfo. As to NCU's programs, check here: www.ncu.edu .
my response! lol...what I meant by that was I have no intention of getting licensed as a psychologist- but I would go for the license as an MFT....
And the answer to the $64,000 question is: Yes, NCU has an MA MFT: www.ncu.edu/university_information/dpro_spec.asp?dpro_id=18&dpro_section_main_id=170 and a PhD MFT: www.ncu.edu/university_information/dpro_spec.asp?dpro_id=22&dpro_section_main_id=304 .
Since you specifically ASKED about SCUPS: Both their Psy.D. and Ph.D. in Psychology programs satisfy the educational requirments for a California psychology license. Oregon's ODA even allows SCUPS grads to mention their Ph.D.s (but not Psy.D.s) in that state. BUT. The California Psychology Board publishes a school-by-school listing of who passes their exam. SCUPS has had a handful of successful applicants, IIRC, but you can check it out for yourself through www.ca.gov Accredited, resident programs have much better success rates. Also, the Cal Psy Board warns potential unaccredited school applicants that federal money may not be forthcoming once in practice. I don't know what this warning means but you should know that it is out there.
Hello Totally1, What state are you seeking MFT licensure in? Also, what type of work do you intend on persuing once you are done? peACE, ACE
I went to the website and found the warning to be ambiguous. At a minimum, the federal agenies I'm familiar with (VA, armed services, and I'm pretty certain federal prisons) require not only RA but APA approved doctoral progam and also APA approved internship. The doctoral progam and the internship are separate entities. Re managed care, HMOs may use any number of strategies to restrict access to provider panels.
reply to ace am already licensed in ny, but not as an mft- and whatever program I actually attend, I want to make sure would be approved for the NY mft license....
Re: my response! Having reviewed all the MA & PhD programs in my previous postings, following are those with Marriage & Family Therapy programs: Capella University www.capellauniversity.edu MS Liberty University www.liberty.edu MA Northcentral University www.ncu.edu MA, PhD Pacifica Graduate Institute www.pacifica.edu MA
Southern Christian University offers an RA and DL, PhD in family Therapy. The school is religious. You'd have to inquire about how much that impacts the teaching. It may not. It seems clinically sound to me. http://www.southernchristian.edu/degree_phd_familytherapy.htm
Re: reply to ace If you haven't already, check NY's regs here. MFT info is on the left hand side. Blessings!
