Please see link to COSC requirements page. On the right hand side it states "Key to General Education". Then there is a column to the right hand side that says "Students who matriculated after 7/01/05". In the very bottom of the General Ed requirements it lists Information Literacy. What classes would fall into this category, I do not see them listed in the list of exams accepted by COSC. If anyone knows, please advise. Apparently, they just added another requirement.

    Greetings,

You *MIGHT* (???) find the following link to Excelsior College's (www.excelsior.edu) "Information Literacy" course helpful.

    https://www.excelsior.edu/portal/page?_pageid=57,114547&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&_piref57_191502_57_114547_114547.next_page=CourseSearchShowServlet&_piref57_191502_57_114547_114547.ecPage=Summary&_piref57_191502_57_114547_114547.ecEvent=Detail&_piref57_191502_57_114547_114547.TITLE_ID=30173202&_piref57_191502_57_114547_114547.START_DATE=%2009/01/2005

N.B. I proffered the above because you asked "What classes would fall into this [Information Literacy] CATEGORY..." (emphasis mine). The above course, obviously, falls into the category of Information Literacy. *** I DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE COURSE WILL SATISFY COSC'S (www.cosc.edu) REQUIREMENTS! ***

    Cordially,

    Richard,

Thanks for the info. I added this course to my favorites. I will double check to see if it satisfies requirements at COSC.

    Thanks once again,

Ok, will keep this in mind. Did the Excelsior version require proctors and or/books? Please ask your wife. I like the sound of completing this in one weekend.

These are good suggestions, I guess I will end up deciding which is quicker and easier to complete. I may want to take this last class before applying to COSC. I am wondering if I can apply and request the full blown $190.00 evaluation at COSC then not matriculate so the clock does not start ticking. The reason, of course, is that once I matriculate I have one year to complete all required coursework or pay another $560.00 per year.

    Thanks Stanislav,

    Abner :)

No. Everything is on the Web, in WebCT, including quizzes and the final.

I'm not happy about the Excelsior course costing $280, but in the end it might be the one I have to use.

Besides the 2 proctored exams, LSU's carries other requirements:

    1) "Four visits to a large public or academic library that has an on-line catalog will be required to complete the graded assignments."

    2) A book with a price of over $40 (as looked up on amazon.com)

    Hi Everybody,

I am going to post thi response for everybody to see, it's from COSC:

    Hello,

I was recently forwarded your email. Thank you for your interest in our
    college.

The information literacy requirement can be met, typically when a
student has completed an English Composition 2 course (due to the
research paper involved). It also can be met by most courses that
    require a research paper.

Charter Oak offers a 1 credit course, IT 100 Computer Literacy this Fall
that meets the requirement for Information Literacy. You can view all
of our Fall course offerings by going to our Distance Learning page on
    our website.

I hope you find this helpful. Have a great week.

    Sincerely,

I think I probably have already met this requiement, I hope anyway.

    Take care,

And thanks to all for your comments.

Education Direct offers a 1 credit Information Literacy course. In fact, I'm taking it right now as part of my degree plan. I know ED also offers individual courses. I'm not sure of the cost for individual courses, but I do know they are quite cheap.

Thanks for this option. Do you have a link to it, or should I just contact Education Direct for all the information?

For some reason, ED doesn't advertise the fact they sell individual courses on its website. I know they do have them, because I have chatted with other people who have taken these courses. I think you will have to contact them directly and tell them you are interested in taking an individual course.

BTW, for Excelsior College, I just found out that the only way to avoid the Information Literacy requirement is to already have a Master's Degree. Below is the info I received today from an academic advisor at Excelsior College:

So, let's get this straight. If I, who has spent the best part of the last 10 years either teaching about or building web-based information systems applied to Excelsior they'd tell me to take this make-work course because my MSc in AI and Comp Sci dates from 1989?

    Ewwwwwwwww!

I do wonder if I will learn anything new in that 1-credit course. At least the course goes quickly, though they might as well add its $250 fee to the enrollment fee.

Don't be fooled by this course helping those students who have these skills already. This course is simply an administrative pocket padder...the only real irritant I've found with Excelsior so far. I took the course just to get it out of the way. I'm too close to being done to fight for $280 bucks...not when for the year, plus my graduation/completion fee, they will have taken nearly $1500 from me - BEFORE I even see my diploma!

Take it and move on...its really not worth the hassle to fight it. You won't learn anything new, if you've been in school for years and have ever written a paper or gone to the library.

The only silver lining for me, is that Excelsior did not take a PE swim class in transfer, so the "IL" class replaced it. It saved me for having to take another 3-4 credit course to make it up, because otherwise I would have been short a credit on my degree...(that I'm nearly finished working on).

Update: I just started and finished Excelsior's "Information Literacy" course today. As expected, I didn't really learn anything, but it took only a few hours to finish with a score of 98% on the final exam. (Unfortunately, it's just a Pass/Fail course.)

If you take this course, be sure to give Excelsior your comments in the Course Evaluation form that's shown in WebCT. Otherwise, they might assume we didn't already know how to do research without violating copyright laws or needing a librarian to hold our hand.

If you take any online class from COSC it will fulfill the information literacy requirement as well.
