Am I missing something, or did I read the following in the DBA description of New Castle:

    DOCTOR OF BUSINESS

(This program will not be offered for 2005)

Is Newcastle in "business" with respect to the DBA?

    Regards - Andy

They are not offering it on campus...

They have a variety of campuses, including the online campus, and they are not offering the DBA in 2005 on all of their campuses. Apparently, the Doctor of Business is something else entirely. From their web site:

"The Doctor of Business program will be the first research professional doctorate in business studies at the University of Newcastle, and will meet the needs of the Australian and international business community for a high-level theory-based professional qualification.

The goal of the Doctor of Business is to develop advanced research skills in students while at the same time making a contribution to the academic literature and management practices. It differs from the traditional PhD, as it requires one year of structured coursework, with a research dissertation to be completed over the second and third years, comprising 70 per cent of the program. The thesis is required to be an equivalent standard of research to the PhD and make an original contribution to academic literature and management practice.

The distinction between the PhD and the DBus rests on the structured research training which is offered in the first year of the DBus. The DBA, by further comparison, will provide a coursework doctorate for those who wish to undertake more advanced study than an MBA and undertake smaller research project."

The Newcastle PhD is more like the traditional UK/Euro PhD and the DBus appears to be more like the USA PhD as it has a large coursework element. The DBA is more so than most others a practitioners degree. Kind of like the DA people wish for around here....

    It's Newcastle...as opposed to New Castle. :)

So, if the DBus is equivalent to the PhD here then where does that leave the Aussie DBA? Newcastle offers three doctorates in business... PhD, DBus, and DBA.

Most things I have read on the forum seem to follow the equal but different thinking for a DBA vs PhD in this country. Since they offer both the DBus and PhD in business that seems to leave a gap for the DBA to fit into an American format. Do the dissertations for DBA's here look that much smaller to the PhD ones? Are the required lengths different?

From my reading today, it almost seems like the Aussie DBA is akin to the DM here.

    No...

In Europe and much of the rest of the world the PhD is primarily a research degree with maybe a small taught component basically about doing research in the subject area. This describes Newcastke's PhD. In the USA, there is most often a year or two taught component to the PhD. This describes Newcastles DBus. The DBA most often is a course based program with a less intensive dissertation based on practical business functions rather than one developing knew knowledge or theory. This describes the Newcastle DBA. I like their DBA a lot because of the wide spectrum of topics they offer which allows you do develop a focus....

    Re: No...

Are you planning to continue the same topic at Newcastle as you had been doing at Durbin? If so, I think Newcastle will fit you well.

Good DBA programs at University of Southern Queensland and University of South Australia- just to mention 2 Aussie ones!
