American Military University www.apus.edu has reportedly been considering offering a PhD in Military Studies once they reach RA.
    University of London www.lon.ac.uk
    University of Luton www.luton.ac.uk
    Madurai Kamaraj University www.mkuniversity.org
    University of Melbourne www.unimelb.edu.au
    University of New England www.une.edu.au
    University of South Africa www.unisa.ac.za
    University of Teesside www.tees.ac.uk
    University of Wales www.lamp.ac.uk
Union Institute www.tui.edu offers a PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences with concentration in History; however, their NCA accreditation is on notice and their OBR authorization is conditional. They will be required to limit the number of PhD fields offered, though social science disciplines seem to be the most likely doctoral fields to still be offered once the current changes at Union are through.

Sorry, thanks for the info. It is allot...
I am interested in something that is accredited and recognized by the Department of Education for federal job recognition of the degree. I am not sure how the accreditation of the foreign distance learning programs work? But I am cert. more interested in the Ph.D. in history or political science.
    Thanks for the information.

For British universities, you look for the Royal Charter. For Australian universities, you check the Australian Qualifications Framework. I'm not sure what you would look for in terms of Indian and South African schools that is specific just to those countries, but for most former members of the British Empire, one would look for a listing in the Commonwealth Universities Yearbook.

By the way, as agilham has warned me repeatedly, one does not ask a British-system (includes also Australia, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, etc. ) school about distance programs; you ask about part-time programs.

Regarding the British system degrees, one does a dissertation-only MPhil and a thesis-only DPhil. There is no coursework required for their graduate degrees.

PhD2B asks where I got my info on possible AMU docs. It was originally in a monthly newsletter that dated from 2001(?)-2003(?). AMU docs have been discussed on this very board at http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19467
