Does John Gray's Columbia State diploma have Austen Henry Leyard signature on it? Some have said Mr. Gray graduated when Columbia when it was considered legit.

Was Columbia State ever considered legit? I am very confused! Please help

So you do not get confuse anymore:

Columbia State University: Degree Mill Shut down by FBI.

Columbia Pacific University: Shut Down by the state of California for not meeting state standars, also John Gray Alma Mater. Is was authorized to operate whe he got his Phd.

Columbia Southern University: DETC accredited and legit.

    Hope this help.

    Best Regards,

Good to see you back Goldie. John Gray (who wrote "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus") received his doctorate from Columbia Pacific University, NOT Columbia State.

Columbia State was always a fraud. Columbia Pacific has had its difficulties lately (and is now "Columbia Commonwealth University", relocated to Montana), but was well regarded in the past.

  4. Hi Todd,
John Gray received his Ph.D. from Columbia Pacific U., at a time when CPU was approved. At that time, according to John Bear, Gray's could have gotten him a licence to practice psychology in California. Obviously Gray did not pursue that option.

CPU was founded in 1978 (I am told by one founder that John Bear was one of the founders but John has never revealed this to me, simply stating that he "consulted" with CPu for awhile).

CPU achieved its first "approval" (one higher than authorization) in 1983 for two business programs. In 1986 it achieved "full institutional approval". It again achieved "full institutional approval" after site team inspection in 1989. And it again achieved full institutional approval after a site inspection in late 1990. In 1995 it received a very bad report from a site inspection team and that's when all the spiraling out of control started.

CPU stopped operating in December 2000 after losing its last state appeal. The owners opened CPU Montana in December/2000 which was renamed CCU in April 2001. CPU remains open in California solely as an alumni office and as an effort to fight its legal battle via the USA federal Appeal Court.

If you would like to see a chronology of CPU, based on original documents rather than speculation, go to http://www.altcpualumni.org and follow the links.

For a slightly flawed scanned copy of the 1991 CPPVE site visit to CPU go to http://www.altcpualumni.org/chronicles/cppve1991.pdf

I graduated from CPU with a B.S. in 1995 after 6 years there and more recently an M.S.
My thesis was 386 pages and referenced 370 sources.
    Hope this helps,
    Earon

    Earon,

Thanks for the information on CPU/CCU. Have you found your CPU degree beneficial to your career? Any obstacles? What was you M.S. in and what was your thesis? Essentially, with much discussion on unaccredited degress I am very curious as to how you faired and why you decided to pursue the CPU route.

    Thanks,

    John

  6. Hi John,
To take a look at my thesis abstract, TOC, peer reviews, and 7 chapters of my thesis go to where it is temporarily stored - http://www.altcpualumni.org/thesis/dex5.html.It is limited to 7 chapters as a defensive stance against plagiarism.

Regarding the other questions - you and I have a several year history of posting on alt.education.distance and now here. Briefly, I entered CPU in 1989 by following the recommendations by John Bear on CPU, and the California education authority statements on the equivalent-to-accreditation statements written on the CPU licence. You can view hundreds of postings by me via the deja.com archive. The other matters have been discussed indepth there.

But suffice it to say that the past six years have not exactly been fun with the CPU problems, for me or for many of my alumni colleagues, who, like you, are professors at regionally accredited schools. But, I have become a much better researcher and investigator since the problems started - due to my committment to get to the bottom of the CPU and CPPVE matter - I'm not finished yet. There are also many relevant articles on CPU at www.altcpualumni.org

As for the future I am about to start a PhD in a large university in Europe (which I will not identify at this point) and have had one paper accepted without revisions in a conservative UK journal. I also have a chapter coming out in a book next year. No details will be released until the events have come to pass. I am also starting two courses for my own interest with the HWMBA in about 1 week (OB and HRM) or as soon as the courses arrive. John, there are people with degrees and there are scholar/thinkers/originators. Look at what they have done and you'll know who is who.
But I think you know that already.

  7. Please note:
The thesis I did at CPU and referred to in my earlier post is at http://www.altcpualumni.org/thesis/dex5.html

There was a problem with the URL in the previous post in that the word "It" got mixed in with the URL.
    Thanks,
    Earon
