Hi, all have you heard of the above "degree mills" (or at least non-RA schools). I am living in Malaysia and suddenly big fuss in the papers about fake degrees. Apparently loads of them are being franchised via local private colleges. These local colleges ask no questions...... the link is

    http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Tuesday/National/20050719083409/index.pda

An ex student is sueing for RM14,000 (3.8rm to USD but this is expensive locally - a years salary) and the head said....

".....very stringent requirements for universities to be regionally accredited, whereas e-learning was "education for all". Complaints, he said, could have been the result of competitors trying to discredit the academy."

    hahahahahaha! nice one

Even one college tried to claim that local Malaysian accreditor had accredited the program (they might have done as they dont check!)

I cant believe people fall for these but its BIG in Asia. I meet so many with really dodgy unaccredited degrees especially doctorates
I checked Cambridgeshire Uni website - lovely to say "seeking accredidation with DETC" etc etc. A masterpiece in saying nothing

    Hi there strangelove,

Know what the funny thing is? These types of organisations have been freely operating in Malaysia for at least 10 years, and probably well before my time of interest in DL. The news is really no news to this board - moreover, I suggest it is boring news. The media continue to beat up and sensationalise a problem which enjoys minor public debate, and then it is ignored. As long as credentialism exists and a 'me too' mentality exists, then it will just continue to grow.

    Cheers,

    George
