    Hello:

I will throw this out to anybody and everbody who may have suggestions on Upper level Spanish coursework. I will be applying to COSC in the near future and will pursue a B.A. in liberal studies with a concentration in Spanish.

Here are the courses in Spanish I have completed:

    101 Elementary Spanish - CC - 3 credits
Spanish CLEP Test - score of 76 - worth 12 credits lower level credit

I am told by COSC they will deduct 3 credits because I had taken 101 Elementary Spanish before taking the CLEP. I believe what they mean by this is I will receive the 3 credits from 101 elementary Spanish, and receive 9 new credits from the Spanish CLEP test, I think.

Anway, I am thinking of taking a language testing proficiency test (orally over the phone) from the Language Training Institute. This would grant me 10 lower level credits and 2 Upper division credits if I pass with a Superior level rating. COSC would approve this because this test is ACE approved. I asked COSC if some of the lower division credits would duplicate, and they did not answer the question. I got more of a submit and evaluation and we will see response. Anyway, it is ok with me if some of the lower division credits duplicate, I could at least gain 2 upper level credits towards my concentration. Please see link below:

    http://www.languagetesting.com/acad_apply2005.cfm

My Spanish concentration is a total of 36 credits, 15 of which must be upper level.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. I am also looking for upper level courses/exams that are as cheap as possible, and that can be completed fairly quickly, maybe even through some kind of competency test other than CLEP. I will add that I am fluent in both the spoken and written aspects of the Spanish language.

    Thanks in advance!

    Abner :)

    Hi Abner,
I wasn't aware that you were pursuing a degree in Spanish. Is this with a view of teaching or just personal interest?

Anyways, I got my 12 credits through CLEP, but that's as far as I've made use of my native Spanish since my degree is in business.

    Good luck.

    Spanish concentration

    Hi Will Makeit!

My B.A. will be in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Spanish. I am mostly pursuing this degree for personal satisfaction, and also because I find the Spanish language quite complex and interesting. At this point in my career, I am really looking to complete my B.A. in anything, the major does not matter to me. Of course, it is nice that I can have a concentration in Spanish because it will only make me more valuable in the workplace.

How have you been? last I remember, you are almost done with your Associate degree. Good job, keep it up!

    Take care,

    Abner :)

    Question

    Hi Ichemist:

I e-mailed COSC to find out whether they grant credit for this exam. Off hand, do you know how much the fee is to take this exam? I am in California, so I would have the test proctored as well, which is no big deal. Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Abner

I am in California too. I took the test a few years back so I don't remember how much I paid, but it wasn't expensive, specially if you consider the number of credits you are getting, I don't think it is more than $ 300, probably ;ess than $ 200 , I got proctored at Pierce College in Woodland Hills and transferred the credits to Excelsior College.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Luis!

I appreciate the info. The price is not bad at all considering the amount of credits and the speed in which they can be obtained. I will wait for an answer from COSC, hopefully they say it is ok.

Thanks once again for the great tip!!!

    Abner :) :)

P.S. Even if you are fluent in Spanish, did you consider the test difficult? Moderately difficult?

    Thanks for the info!

Is there an offical (NYU) website where I can find more about these examinations - e.g. where and how to take them?

    thanks!

    Thanks, Abner,
but that's not really an official NYU website (but moreover a UIC one) - but it does contain quite a few useful information though.
Anyhow, does one have another (more official) link for me?
    Thanks,
    m.

I think your school has to approve it, then you e-mail the person it indicates on the link I sent you. I already e-mailed the person listed on the link, he said there is nothing showing tuition prices, etc. If COSC says they will accept this exam, I will e-mail the test coordinator and ask him how to proceed after that.

Maybe I chemist can shed some more light on this. That was all I was able to find out.

    Take care,

Abner P.S. If I were you, I would e-mail your school and find out if they accept/grant credit for this exam, and then go from there.

    Good point,
but first I would need to find out if those NYU exams can also be taken in Europe...

    Thanks again,
