We often talk about business, education, and sometimes computer science programs here. However, for those interested, Michigan State offers a MS and PhD in Physics that looks to be on-line. The option is in beam physics.

I just recently read about the advances made in teleportation. Maybe an on-line learner will invent the Star Trek transporter.

    "distance" vs. "remote"

The MSU PhD program in Beam Physics is a "distance" program in the sense that it is offered to off-campus students. However, it differs from most of the distance degree programs covered in this forum, because it cannot be undertaken virtually anywhere. In this case, PhD candidates need to have access to a "suitable laboratory", presumably one that includes a particle accelerator.

This sort of limitation is not unusual for engineering and science "distance" programs. In such cases, a "distance" program is made available off-campus, but it still requires the student to be affiliated with some other sponsoring local institution, such as a corporate, government, or university laboratory. Sometimes such programs are described as "remote".

    Re: "distance" vs. "remote"

Many years back there wasn't much in the way of distant graduate programs in engineering. I looked for them in about 1986. However, I recall basically finding only one that seemed to fit the bill...University of Idaho. They seemed to be the kings in it for a long time. The program looked mainly like a telvised deal.

We'd all be better off if John Ryan posted here more frequently. Fortunately, in his absence, we can refer to his website which lists a remarkable number of arts and SCIENCES degree programs. It's well worth a look.
