Greetings, A question: Anyone know of a CA-Approved distance education college/university that offer a doctoral degree in English or TESOL/ESL? Kenneth
Please pardon my ignorance, but how might this differ from a plain old PhD or EdD where the student chooses to concentrate (dissertation topic) in the area of TESL? Jack
As other posters have mentioned, Dave's ESL Cafe is a good resource for current or aspiring ESL teachers and students. Here is a thread on distance doctorates in ESL that mentions a few--English and Australian, though, not Californian. http://www.eslcafe.com/discussion/dz1/index.cgi?read=1408935483 Another point that doesn't actually speak to your question, but may be relevant to other readers: Most, not all, ESL doctorates are offered by Applied Linguistics or Education, rather than English, departments. The typical ESL and English doctorates have little in common.
Thanks Jack: No difference whatsoever, hence, I didn't specify--just used the generic "doctoral". Of course, you can do whatever you want at the dissertation level, but I was asking about programs that were specifically geared for ESL/TESL/TESOL, etc. 3$bill: Thanks for the information. I will check it out. But, I am still in finding out if there any CA-approved programs in TESL or applied linguistics, etc. Kenneth
Just so the casual reader won't just skim past 3$bill's post, above, and not realize what a gem it is, I want to "testify," as they say, for just a second: From my reading two or three other threads here, I have come to the conclusion that 3$bill really knows what he's talking about in this area. And I mean really knows. Trust me on this one, folks. Just wanted to throw that in. Ummm... now that I think of it, doesn't Tom Nixon also have some expertise in this area?
Kenneth, From my experience in the EFL field (8+ years teaching/recruiting/HR), there are no DL doctorates offered in the U.S. for TESL/Applied Linguistics; all programs are B&M. There are, however, several in the U.K. and Australia. And, to echo 3$bill, you would want to search Education and Linguistics programs for such a degree; ESL/EFL and English are two vastly different fields in many ways. Think of ESL/EFL more as foreign language education, where English just happens to be the foreign language in question. Most of what you'd learn in this field, and/or Applied Linguistics, would hold true for teaching Spanish, Chinese, Urdu, etc. Cheers, Adrienne
Thanks again Thank you all for your replies, and I "get" what you are saying, too. What I wanted to find out was whether there were California-Approved doctorates (i.e., EdD, PhD, etc) that were DL. I am sure that there are many that are B&M, as Adrienne rightly points out. But, I was curious about that class of degrees. Thanks to all who replied. Kenneth
