It certainly is a relief to finally have somewhere to go to get knowledgeable answers and reliable information regarding validity and reputation of degrees and schools!! Re: the PhD in Human Behavior at Newport University, UK -- is it reputable? It states that the degree will be awarded by Newport University, USA. I ran across this through a Behavioral Sci search that led me to City College -- seems that is part of Newport Univ, UK? It's all rather confusing. Accreditation statement: http://www.citycollege.ac.uk/newport/about.html PhD in Human Behavior program: http://www.citycollege.ac.uk/newport/phd.html And finally Newport University, USA: http://www.newport.com.hk/ Thanks a bunch for any information and/or suggestions/advice you may have
Newport University has no recognized accreditation, it is California approved but they've hedged their bets by incorporating in South Dakota also. They try to get cute in their accreditation statement by pulling out the old ISO 9001 crap. Don't buy it. Newport is legal, but IMO there are better options available to DL students. Bottom line, what you end up with is a degree from an unaccredited school. Bruce
Thanks, Bruce -- that's kinda what I figured with Newport USA. But what about City College in London and Newport U in London? How do they fit into all this? They sure have a convoluted set-up for these degree programs. I couldn't really figure out which one officially offered the PhD program. Speaking of which -- the program description looks comparable to a lot of PhD programs I've looked at from other schools -- even accredited ones ! Do you think those are real "taught" courses as is implied in the listing of courses? Would the fact that the actual degree work takes place through a UK uni make a difference? Couldn't find any listing of faculty either -- I'm thinking about sending off for some "snail mail" brochures just out of curiosity to see what they send. Have a good day -- sunnie
The Newport U.K. web site carries the statement: "Note: Newport University-UK Campus is not a degree granting institution; all awards are made by Newport University in the USA." This would seem to make the Newport U. - City College relationship immaterial, no matter its nature, as one will still end up with an unaccredited degree. The claim to degree-granting authority from South Dakota is interesting. With no recognized form of accreditation, Newport would appear to fall into the group of schools that were being "invited" to leave South Dakota at the beginning of this month. ------------------ Bill Gossett
