The DSST (DANTES) program provides the opportunity for people to earn college credit for what they have learned outside of the traditional classroom through examinations taken for college credit. The examinations are accepted or administered at over 1,900 colleges and universities nationwide and approved by ACE (American Council on Education). There are two examinations offered, Criminal Justice and Introduction to Law Enforcement.
Most colleges award 3 credits for each courses.

These sources can be used to acquire CEU units and as source material for doing credits by portfolio assessment.

    Accreditation:
We offer a professional certificate of completion for our courses. However, we do not currently offer CEUs or a degree or college credit, as our courses are designed to supplement other programs, colleges, and universities, not compete with them. Please note, however, that many students have independently arranged for CEUs with the state agency that governs their profession, or graduate, undergraduate and/ or independent study credits with their respective universities. We provide supporting documentation for this process whenever possible.

Getting academic credit for law enforcement training is now fairly common. Excelsior College has what's called Criminal Justice Training Assessment, where the school will send a team to assess a law enforcement agency's training program, and assign academic credit.

Quite a few police/sheriff's academies in California are sponsored by community colleges and academic credits are given upon completion of the academy. If memory serves me right, I recieved 12-15 semester units from Los Medanos College for a 23 week academy (760+ hours or so)

I think the exception is the CHP academy (which I thought was odd because that is probably one of the most rigourous academies in the country) and SFPD's academy (also, if memory serves me, they lost their POST acredidation once due to lax training standards)

I wonder if they'd give you credit for a year or so in the pen?

It would be a fairly simple (if a bit time-consuming) procedure to still get academic credit if someone went to the CHP or SFPD academy, they would just need to use the portfolio process.

Which one had the problem with accreditation, CHP or SFPD?

The CHP academy is not affilliated with any community college and at least back in the 80's, graduates received no college credits upon graduation.

The SFPD had problems with POST (California Police Officer Standards and Training commmission) during the 80's due to lax hiring standards. (nothing to do with academic accredidation). I know they have since brought up there standards.
