I am about to begin my TUI PhD in Education. I received my Masters online through California State University, Hayward. I loved the program at Hayward. Each class was unique as the instructors used a variety of techniques such as group work, threaded discussion, textbooks, papers, capstone projects, and webpage authoring for students to complete classes. I just received my first CD from Touro and it looks like I am going to be writing papers every two weeks and receiving a grade, with possibly some threaded discussion. Does anyone have experience with TUI and can tell me what their courses are like? I hope it is more than writing papers and uploading them!

    thinktank,

That is all it is....you'll write a Case Assignment and a Session Long Project every two weeks and participate in the threaded discussion. That will make up your grade.

I started my MBA at TUI but have since transferred to Bellevue University because of this fact. I wanted another approach to learning then just writing papers. TUI was allot of work but I feel I'm learning more at Bellevue since I am much more involved in the learning process then I was at TUI.

Hope this helps and good luck,

I agree...TUI was a lot of writing and I prefer the NCU approach for my PhD.

I thought NCU was also a lot of writing and little to no interaction with instructors and other students. Other then not sending a course on CD, how is the NCU approach different?

    Outlier

Wait, at TUI you mostly just write papers and have minimal interaction with faculty and students? That actually sounds, well, great! I guess I'm an outlier here, but this is the first thing I've read about Union that makes me want to consider them!

    What's the web site?

We're talking about Touro University International not The Union Institute.

NCU has papers also. It also has, so far, problems to answer for accounting. I guess it just comes down to the fact that I like books rather then reading internet stories.

    question for randell

    Randell,

Is it just the books or the process that is different at NCU?

    NSU's approach is different

Folks - I find this thread interesting. NSU's approach is quite different. In their DBA program you actually attend class with other students and a professor. Each course includes a long paper - but also has healthy doses of interaction. My preference - I like NSU's courses and can't imagine toiling away on papers without interaction.

    Regards - Andy

    Fear not Andy ...

At the PhD level, the TUI courses also require
interactions with the other class members and
with the professor via Horizon Live sessions
and as well via the Threaded Discusssions ...

Which serve an important role and I agree,
    adds to the learning experience.

Here is the course work for one module (there are 5 per class) for the MKT501 course. I don't think there is as much learning involved as the NCU classes.

Look at this link for NCU course work-

    TUI MKT501
    CASE ASSIGNMENT

    First read:

    Niche Mania!

by James G. Cobb from the New York Times, October 23, 2002, pg. G 1. Click on the title for the Proquest link (live); click HERE if you need an off-line link that has been enhanced.

Then, read the case of Harley Davidson:

Harley Davidson: Marketing an American Icon

that appears in the e-zine @issue, Vol. 2, Issue 1 published by the Corporate Design Foundation by clicking on the title above or clicking here for the "live" link.

Business Week profiled Harley Davidson in their feature on corporate strategies. Read the November 10, 2003 article "Hurdles on the Road to Hog Heaven: Can Harley expand output and lure new bikers without alienating the hard core?"

Then, for additional resources or information to assist you in writing your four to five page paper, you might want to look at the Harley Davidson web site by clicking HERE.

Apply Module 1 reading/concepts (and your personal knowledge), and integrate (you must cite* the article above on "Niche Marketing" and at least three background readings) your marketing knowledge to Harley Davidson and the information you find in the article by answering the following questions:

    * As a graduate student, you should cite articles within text that relate to the point you are making. An example would be:

Harley Davidson has a specific strategy related to XYZ (Cobb, 2002).

Be sure to quote any passages that are direct from a source, and cite the (author, year, p. #). You want to cite other works to show that you are integrating material from those readings into your own words and text of your paper. Then, at the end of your paper, make a reference list, putting references in alphabetical order.

What strategies and tactics does Harley Davidson use to:

    1) Distribute their products (both core and support products)

    2) Price their products

    3) Promote their products?

In your response, you should identify and discuss Harley Davidson's various markets and Harley Davidson's positioning/image in each market. Move beyond just describing and analyze the case as part of your paper and as you describe these various elements.

    SESSION LONG PROJECT
The SLP acts as a vehicle to give the topics of each module a personal, concrete expression. These modular session long project assignments are due at the end of each module. At the end, for SLP 5, you'll be asked to integrate each of your individual papers into a final paper.

    Business Strategy and Marketing Strategy

Over the next twelve weeks you will be examining and organization (company) for your session-long project.

It is suggested the organization or company you choose for this assignment be one in which you have easy access to the non-proprietary information that you will be asked to cover in your paper or presentation. If you work in an office of an organization or company and that organization or company says it

"markets" a product or service and

is willing to let you have access to the information that the project requires

much of the work on your SLP will be re-writing what you obtain into the prescribed format. If a military unit to which you have access is involved in marketing activities, then you could use that unit.

For many military assignments, marketing may not be a part of the routine operations and for these situations, I recommend you select an alternative organization. Some examples might be companies of products and services you regularly use (you could look at cars, toothbrushes, laundry soap, computers, clothing lines, etc.), or companies that you've worked for in the past. It is recommended that you scan the SLP topics prior to selecting an organizational example, to make sure that you can readily write and apply the materials to your organizational example at each step. If you need additional assistance, please contact your graduate assistant for ideas.

    For this first SLP:

Please write a three to five page paper addressing the following:

Name of (the division of) the Organization or Company you have chosen to examine

    The Organization's Mission

The Products (Services) the company produces (sells)

The Company's position in the market place

The companies with whom your company competes.

How does marketing impact the company's financial objectives?

Note that since the firm you are examining might have more than one product, you should limit your analysis to only one of the markets in which your firm operates.

Please answer this question in a 3 to 4 page paper and submit it for grading by the end of this module.

    thank you and a question

Thank you for the feedback and the course description. I also like books, but I am paying for this thing by myself and NCU doesn't participate in Federal loans. I had been excited about touro and should probably move forward. I did like NCU's administration better. What are two specific differences between TUI and NCU at the PhD level?

    Randell1234,

You are comparing the TUI MBA program to the NCU PhD. Needless to say you are comparing apples and oranges.

Maybe you need to spend more time studying then bashing your alma mater with misleading information.

PS: the material is copyright protected and I do not think it should be posted online.

Maybe I am just slow but, the TUI format is demanding and accomodates people with jobs. The SLP being 4-6 pages is rare; most of mine have been a minimum of twenty-pages, properly formatted (APA style); with appropriate refererences.

I believe a lot of what you get out of a course is based upon what is asked of you and what you put into it. Simply copying something down and submitting it for a grade is not learning. At TUI, I have been asked questions by my Profs. and many I admit that I honestly could not answer appropriately.

The reading assignments (for the health sciences PhD) were lengthy, and at times I wished I could read a book and answer questions from the prospective of the author. At the higher education levels, one must perform research and that is what TUI is about. When you finish with your degree from TUI, you will know how to properly conduct research, defend your writings, and think differently (on different planes).

My wife took some education classes from NCU (PHD) program and was bored to death: she already knew the material. Very little was new, or could rightfully be considered real learning in her opinion.

In the end it is up to you to decide what YOU want to accomplish from any degree program. Do you want additional letters behind your name or do you want to learn something. I think overall at TUI the focus is on learning, and I am not knocking other schools out there. TUI in my humble opinion is great! :p

Well I am comparing course work to course work...that is all.

As far as spending more time studying and less time bashing my alms mater with misleading information. There is nothing misleading about my opinion. I alway state information as an opinion in this context. I am not bashing TUI. As for studying more...whatever.

Are we talking about the MBA or PHD program? I just completed the MBA program and have never written a minimum of 20 pages for a SLP unless it was a cumulative paper in SLP 5 (i.e. MKT501 or MGT599)

    different is normal

I know that different disciplines are going to have different expectations. I am just hoping that we don't just write papers and turn them in for a grade. Online education can build community and I hope TUI has the insight to achieve this.

I have a few thoughts, comments and corrections regarding several discussion points presented by Randal1234 and others….

Books are very conducive and relevant for taught foundation material, which is generally covered at the undergraduate and masters level. Accordingly, I can appreciate one’s affinity toward books for these types of courses as a mater of learning style or preference.

However, PhD programs are much more research oriented and anticipate that students have already mastered the taught foundation material and concepts. Most PhD programs also expect that students possess basic research and statistical analysis skills before acceptance. Accordingly, PhD courses focus largely on development of research skills and exploration of various research streams associated with past, current and potential research areas. Unfortunately, books tend to be somewhat limited and dated in terms exploration, evaluation and synthesis of current literature and overall body of knowledge. Additionally, books often reflect a very limited view that is based on just one author’s perspective, interpretation and sometimes biased presentation of material.

Therefore, TUI PhD courses, like that of many other research oriented schools, leverage and focus on a broad range of published studies, peer reviewed and industry journals, and related research projects to develop research skills and specific research domain knowledge. Additionally, students do not just write papers. Instead, they critically review, examine, compare, and analyze current research to form a greater understanding surrounding a current body of knowledge, effective research approaches and areas for future study. Students also practice and refine their ability to develop coherent literature reviews, conceptualize and establish research questions and theoretical foundation, and operationalize scholarly research projects.

Indeed, TUI’s PhD programs also include several research methods and statistical analysis courses that are intended to further develop and refine more advanced research methods, procedural, and statistical analysis skills. Of course, textbooks are useful for these types of taught courses. Accordingly, TUI provides the primary material and lectures on CD, interactively covers the material during the real-time Horizon Live sessions, and recommends additional reading and companion books. For example, Research 610 (Advanced Multivariate Data Analysis) offers a complete set of course material on CD and also recommends the book Multivariate Data Analysis (5th Edition) by Hair as a companion textbook. In this type of course, students answer specific questions, solve problems and demonstrate proficiency by performing various multivariate analysis techniques based on actual research scenarios and datasets.

I also struggle with Randal1234’s comparison of his MBA program studies at TUI to that of his present PhD courses at NCU, or his suggestion that his MBA courses at TUI are substantially the same as the PhD level courses. In both cases he compares apples to oranges, and his latter assumption is substantially incorrect. I base my position on first hand knowledge from completing both the MBA and PhD programs at TUI, along with my current participation as faculty.
