One of the problems I had with it, at least initially, was some of the content was very light. There might have been a brief syllabus, a textbook listed, and a list of questions from the textbook and very little else (a quiz or assignment perhaps). Very little useful information to a student of the discipline.

Fortunately, the sparse courses seem to be in the minority.

I agree with James. I got the distinct impression that this thing was mostly MIT self-promotion.

There are countless course websites out there, and many of them are better than MITs, at least in my opinion.

Here's a truly good course website, for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's English 354, The Bible as Literature and in Literature and the Arts

    http://cla.calpoly.edu/~smarx/courses/354/

It includes lecture notes, the Bible texts being studied, the full online text of one of the textbooks ('Reading the Old Testament', written by the class instructor), many supplementary readings plus all kinds of online art and images.

It's essentially the entire class content, right there for anyone who wants to study it without all that annoying assignments and exams stuff.

How can people find good online materials for independent study? Probably the shortest answer is Google. Do a few Google advanced searches for technical terms and issues of interest from subjects that you want to study. You may or may not want to restrict the searches to .edu sites (try it both ways). You will be led to pages that contain the desired words, often embedded in the context of a discussion. Then follow it back and determine what you've uncovered, then decide whether or not it's of use.

Besides courses, you often find that professors post the full-text of their published and unpublished papers and presentations. So people can look at professors' personal webpages. Occasionally you hit a treasure trove.

For an example of one of those in the philosophy of mind (and philosophy generally), there's James' Aussie mate David Chalmers' website. He's from Adelaide, is currently at the Australian National University, and maintains an awesome website:

    http://consc.net/chalmers/

While what you find in any one place may be fragmentary, combining it with material gleaned from lots of different hits can start to get really powerful. What's more, it allows you to look at how lots of different professors are addressing the same material, highlighting different approaches and points of view.

Thanks for pointing the link to Cal Poly this is very valuble to me.

For me MIT link was especially good because for a strange reason it wasn't the class material but the MIT suplemental material that mached my exams and the was closely following the exams questions. This helped me allot and I was ready for the exams better then without the MIT material.

Not the same for other sites I used.

I have no involvement with MIT, and simply sharing the info.

As James stated it depends on classes and some are scarse wile others are very comprehansive.
